Recently got a 660 with the torque out. It seems to go very slow was hoping it was stuck on the low side . Took the inspection cover off and saw that the throwout bearing wasnt making contact with the pressure plate fingers meaning clutch locked in high right? I adjusted the linkage to release the clutch tryed it and it slowed down to a stop. So the torque is out on the low side and the 660 is just geared to go slow am i right? Or in other words what are the ground speeds ? Thanks in advance

I've only had my 660 in fifth one time. It was when I purchased it about 8 years ago on the NY/VT border and didn't have a fuel sticker for NY. I roaded it to a VT rest area for a distance of one mile. I thought the speed was typical of the other big IH models I own.

Nebraska tests report 15.39 mph with 18-26 tires. Two tests showed that speed. The third test is not reported in CH Wendel's book. Seeing that the speed is carried out to two decimal places, I would have to assume that the speed is calulated using loaded radius, planetary reduction, bull gear reduction, differential gear reduction, and engine RPM.

My 660 has 18.4 x 34 tires and probably stands a bit taller than the test tractors. If your tach works, your should be going 15-16 MPH at 2400 rpm. If somebody replaced the ring and pinion in the differential, you would go alot faster. I don't think there is a gear set available that would make you go slower.

I'll let soemone else comment on the TA.

Wardner The road speed seems about 15mph I was expecting about 20 but all the other gears seem slow too.First gear with the torque back would be a real competitor in a slow race and fourth just feels like fourth in an M not a Super M. Thanks for the reply

If tractor has the low speed 1,3 and 4th gear in transmission plus planetary gears and maybe smaller diameter tires. I would think it would be slower than some even with the increased RPM they were set to. On the T/A if the T/A clutch does'nt slip you have dirrect drive. If T/A works on low side it does'nt care if T/A clutch is even there as long as its released.

dave wouldn't the 660 have a faster ring and pinion to make up for the extra planetary reduction ?

Randy,
From the parts book:

Farmall 560 15/49 teeth (slower)
IH 560 16/49 teeth (faster)
IH 660 15/49 teeth (slower)

The main shafts (pinion gear at end) all have different part numbers.

This appears opposite of your intuition. The 660 is geared slower at the ring and pinion than the IH 560. To get both tractors runing a top speed of approximately 16 mph, the 660 is made to run at 2400 rpm vs 1800 rpm(?) for the IH 560.

If you have the time, you can do the math that I outlined previously. Suffice it to say that the reduction of the planetaries is more than offset by the higher engine rpm.

Other differential gear sets will fit the 660. They come from the SMTA, 400/450, and corresponding W models. They will all dramatically increase the speed of any 560 or 660. Top speed might be in the 19 to 22 mph range. I am not going to look up teeth counts on them and do the math unless you beg me.

It"s a Wheatland tractor, geared and weighted to pull larger implements on the open prairies of the mid-West. Naturally, that means slower.
