424 Hydr, sufficient GPM/Pressure for Small Backho

I want to build a small CadPlan type backhoe for my tractor IH424.

Usually these small jobbers are already designed for 4GPM@4000lbs w/8HP Engine, with the rated cylinders it already has on it.

I want to tap off my Aux connections on the tractor. My concern for power is less than for implement speed. I don't want to dig the hole faster by hand than by machine!Ha, I'm not worried about super speedy either, but don't want to sacrifice a lot of power for speed either. Is the tractor's 9GPM@2100lbs sufficient to power a little backhoe and still give me a good performance?. Actually it's probably a bit less than top performing due to wear, maybe 7@1800. 3PH is very good.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Spence G

Hey spence, send me an email to cooldude@ilovejesus.net and I'll send ya a nice PDF file for calculating hydraulic cylinder force and speed. You can use that to calculate what cylinders you need. Also, lets say your main boom is 3 feet and your cylinder is connected 1 foot from the pivot, u can use ratios to calculate the actual effective force at the end of the boom. It's never EXACT, but it will definitely tell you if you are underpowered.
Your 9gpm, 2100 psi pump should be sufficient if you get the right cylinders...

I calulated my dump cylinders on my loader to have an effect force of 1000lbs at the lip, and have rolled a car over with that same lip. Hydraulics rule!! my speed is also good as well, and I'm very happy with my results.
Also if you got any questions, I can try to help you out.

Do it, The worst case (and I believe you will be happy) is that the cylinders are designed for higher pressure less volume. This will make it faster and weaker than designed with your higher volume lower pressure pump.
Either add 20% to the cylinder diameter, and use 1/2" I.D. hoses and valves than specification given in the prints, or you could use a higher pressure hydro pump on the PTO shaft. JimN

Thanks Ja, It's rough for us guys with barn shops to test the stuff out before buying. I guess what I can do is buy one cylinder and a couple of lines and try it out. That won't be a good indicator of speed as it would need load to make it accurate.

PTO pumps run a hefty 700$, but I cold rig a geared up gizmo for 1/3 the cost with a pto welding coupler and a couple motorcycle sprokets and chain. I'd use the designed pump. I'd need an oil bath arrangement too. A bit dangerous and it'd need a shear pin just in case. Wouldn't take long to put togeather.

The options are out there. Had a chance to buy a used farm 3PH backhoe once for 800$, should a took it.

Thanks for the tip. Spence

Unless you load it to the point of pressure relief bypass, or seriously slow the engine with hydro load (won't happen) the speed will be that of an unloaded cylinder. JimN
