To remove the tires and rims from the tractor,I had to remove the wheel. The square head bolt went thru the wheel and clamp from the outside. A nut was on the inside, under the inside clamp. After removing the nuts that held the inside clamps, the tire would slide in toward the axle housing, instead of away from tractor. The only thing I can think of is, that at sometime in this tractors past, it had duals on it. If these wheels were reversed, then the rims could have been removed to outside, without removing the wheel. Any other explainations for someone to do this??? Previous owner had a cornpicker on it.

The bolts had so much rust and dirt on them, that I did not believe that I would be able to get them off without a major effort. Thank you for the info.

No need to remove wheel.

All a fella has to do is remove THREE bolts in a row, and the rim WILL slip over the wheel and fall off.

by bolts I mean the outside clamp, all inner clamps must come off of course, just three outer clamps in a series.

If you have the wheel type with 8 clamps holding rim on, the clanps were made to go on either side of wheel and the rim will pass over wheel either way. If you have type wheel that uses 6 clamps to hold rim you can take bolts completely out of wheel and rim will pass over wheel. But if the bolts are rusty or you are going to move wheel on axle anyway its probably easier to do it the way you did. Most 6 clamp wheels have nuts to outside of tractor with wheels dished out. Bolts can be turned either way in wheel to suit owner.

dave, with the drop center rims if the nuts are to the inside you can just take the nuts and inside clamps off and the rim will pivot at the drive lug spot and come off without removing the outside clamps.

Thanks never tryed it like that. Relized after reading post agian that he must have 6 clamp wheels also, since he mentioned nut was under clamp.

dave i found this out kind of by accident. we were taking the rims off of a g john deere that had the cast hubs in the wide position and we didn't want to fight those always frozen tight jd hubs so we put the drive slot at the top and turned the rim sideways and it came right off.

Your tractor came from the factory that way. When the tractor was assembled, the rear wheels were installed with dish out, just opposite of the way it is now. The rear wheels were installed this way to keep the tractor narrower so that more of them could be fitted on the flat train car. When the dealer recieved the tractor, he then removed the entire wheel assembly from the axle, and swapped them side to side. This is why the bolts and clamps are backwards from what you think it should be.
