this weekend I went through the transmition on my 39 M. I took everything out and checked all the bearings and replace all the seals. I removed the seal from the lower shaft that drives the lift all pump and the original had 2 differet seals there. The parts book only shows 1 seal there. Should there be a second seal there?. This transmition sat for a long time and the gears that were out of the oil have some rust on them. Should I be concered about that? any way to clean them or will this come off in time? This was the first one of these I have gone through, wasnt bad if you do it in the right sequence( hated repulling the axles and bull gears again) Just glad its done

Why use 2 seals. if the first one holds(seals)the second will run dry and ruin it.

Apparently the countershaft oil seal has been changed at some time. The original, thick seal is no longer available so most of the time it is replaced with 2 thinner seals. I would not be overly concerned with the surface rust on the gears.

Put a finger full of wheel bearing grease between the two seals, it keeps the second seal happy. JimN

I suppose if the gears are readily removeable, you could lightly wire brush them with a benchtype wire wheel. make sure its not a very stiff brush. Make sure you air them off and clean them with carb cleaner or soap and water (thoroughly dry them if u use water, I would use a propane torch bneing careful not to concentrate the heat in one spot too long, or a hairdryer/heat gun). Ideally it would be nice to get them clean, but I dont see why it would be detrimental to anything. The rust on the sides will probably never come off by itself, but the constant immersion in oil, if you plan to use it often, will defintiely keep them from rusting further. As for the teeth, that rust will come off in a matter of a few hours of use.
