if your brakes are sticking, I'm guessing the brake shafts are wore.causing the disc to have to get over a little ridge on the brake shaft both on application and release, when I install new disc's I file the edges to take the sharp corners off so if they do get cocked they still will apply and release.

super m: If the parts are quite new, very likely dirt is your problem. I farmed with these for years, annual event was taking them apart and cleaning. Brakes that are used create dust and that dust cakes in the ball and ramps.

Another thing we are starting to see, is surfaces worn on both sides of brake discs and actuater, thus even with new actuator and discs inside the space is too wide, causing actuators to open too far, and you get a jambing effect. What you can do in this case is plane down surface of brake housing where meets tractor chassis. Be careful with this one, don't plane off too much. There are guys on here who have done it, very likely Bob M is one of them.

Later models like the 656, used a system of shims, to make the chamber smaller. I guess by the time the 656 was built, IH realized these letter series tractors were going to last long enough to wear that braking surface. Little did they know, 40 years could be added to that. Probably by now another 50 could be added. Ohhhh the heartaches Corperate America dreated for themselves, building tractors that had such longeviety. Just think of the new tractors they would be selling if we couldn't keep these old ones running.

super_m...First I would make sure your brakes are adjusted properly (about 1" of free travel on the pedal). If they are and that's not the problem, then you need to remove the brake covers and see what's going on. Everything should be CLEAN inside. If the actuator plates, springs or balls show any rust, clean them. Also check the splined shafts for burrs or nicks and clean them up with sandpaper. And jwal10 was right, look for any broken springs or balls that show extreme pitting. All these conditions can interfere with normal brake action. The balls have to move smoothly up the ramps machined into the actuator plates when the brakes are applied. Check for nicks, pitting or rust there too. When you reassemble the brakes, put a LIGHT coat of graphite lubricant on the balls. Put a LIGHT coat of Never-Seize lubricant on the splined shafts.

The real SM brake expert on this site is Bob M. His advice helped me replace the brakes on my SM. I'm basically passing along the same things he told me.

Hope this helps. David

Hi, A lot of times the actuators are worn out where the balls go into the sockets, the actuator plates need replaced. Also some times springs will be brocken.
