need to remove the axle bolts which clamp the wheel to the axle. Purchased a 1/2" drive 27" long breaker bar, put a shallow well 1" socket on the bolt... nothing. the breaker bar was bowing and stressing so bad I was fearful it would snap in half. How to remove these stubborn bolts safely? I suppose I can spend the money and finally purchase an air impact wrench, are these much stronger than my efforts with the breaker bar?

Clip the heads off the bolts with a torch or chizzle knock them out with a punch and replace them with new ones.

(I guess my problem is that I do not have patience!)

I would soak them with PB, etc,for a couple of days. Use a 3/4 round soft rod and a 3#hammer. Place the end of the rod on a face of the bolt and give it a good good slam w/the hammer. By doing so, you will warm up the bolt enuf for the liquid to penatrate deeper. Then use the socket set. It will loosen the bolts. BTDT.
Good Luck..... .

As others said, get a 3/4 inch drive socket and breaker bar with cheater and make sure the socket is a six point. Then use the breaker bar and plenty of penetrant. Let is soak for a day or two. Also, forget the 1/2 inch drive impact. If you did not get it with the 1/2 inch breaker bar, you certainly won't get there with the 1/2 inch impact wrench.

My prefered tool for this job is the 3/4 inch impact wrench. Makes short work of it. I wouldn't even try a 1/2 inch impact wrench if you are putting the torque on them and they aren't moving.

Short of heat, soak 'em down good with pbBlaster, etc., then a few days later, slowly work 'em back and forth(tighten/loosen), back and forth, back and forth. Sometimes they will SLOWLY begin to turn. Even if/when they begin to turn, continue with the back and forth till they really start to come. I've gotten some axle clamp bolts loose on my SC and DC CASES that really surprised me. Another trick is to hit the nut a SHARP blow with a big hammer. This can break them loose.

Good luck. Glenn F.

Put the heat to them. Get a 6 point 3/4" drive sochet and ratchet. Hal

Heat and a lot of tranny fluid, PB etc. Also a bigger socket set helps. I use a 3/4 drive set for things like that. Cheap set but better then a 1/2 inch drive set. I think I payed $75 or so for the 3/4 set I have

Arod,

You're wasting your time; keep at it and you will for sure break your new breaker bar.

Have you tried the IH wheel wrench yet?

Allan
