Hello
I was wondering about a IH 46 small square baler, its in side, used this last summer for straw, it looks good and guy says it works fine, dont know if its twine or wire, i didnt look that close.
My question is what is it worth, and are parts availiable for it, would it be worth buying for a couple hundred bales a year. Im in east central illinois, and the guy is lossing his shed and has no place to put it.
Thanks
Shawn

You ought to be able to find a good 275 twine baler for about 1100. And you would be well ahead of the old 46. Many more adjustments available on the 273/275 for different types of hay. Better pickup, not so sensitive to where the hay is fed in..left/right. I never get misshaped bales with the 275. I have some length problems due to operator error though!

I use my 46 for several thousand bales every year and it does a good job. If you are not familiar with this machine I suggest getting a manual and reading it carefully. There are several grease nipples in obscure places. The trouble shooting guide section for the knotters is invaluable if you have trouble in this area. One area to check is the cams that operate the pickup teeth. The bearings are sealed and cannot be greased. If they, or one of them siezes up, the eliptical cam track can quickly wear through and jam the whole kaboodle solid.
My 2cents, Karl

Shawn, i had a 46 for years, it was good & reliable. I don't know what it's worth though - Always stored inside is worth something to me. Some years ago i had a NH 56 rake, paid 1000.00 for it, used it several years & sold it for 1000.00. Back in 1970 i think i paid 1200.00 for the 46 i had, it was a nice one. Todays pricing, i just don't know.

I don't know why an H would not pull a 46 baler, unless you have some very hilly ground. We used to pull the 45with a C at times, loading on a wagon.

You can get a lot of mixed opinions about IH balers but a model 46 is a decent baler when everything is set right. I have one and bale about 2000 bales per year with very little trouble. I've bought a couple of small parts but they were available at the dealer. I haven't had any serious mechanical problems with mine and I've owned it almost 20 years. There are lots of them in junk yards so thats another source of parts.
