WD6 Power Steering

Just wanted to know what I can do to make this wd6 tractor steer easier. Also IS it possible to add a Power Steering unit on here,and how would a guy put it on. Thanks

There's a guy over on the Red Power site who's successfully made a modification to his 9 series tractors that makes 'em steer MUCH easier, however it's not what you'd want to do if originality is what you're after.

He shortens the pitman arm and if that's not enough he lengthens the arm on the spindle.

If a good welder does the work there's no durability issues. He says it makes a WD-9 with a loader steer as easy as if it had power steering....

I had a power steering unit for my SWD-6 and it was a drag link type (my 600 had the same set up). I sold it cause the tractor steers so easily. Probably someone else would have one if you put up an add in the classifieds. As mentioned above, make sure everything is lubed well.

You need to look at later W models that have power steering. Although I can't say for sure, I suspect the hydraulic drag link type power steering off a W-400/450 would work. I am not certain because I don't own a W-6.

The same type of power steering is factory installed on my 650 and 660. A sensor in the drag link feels the direction of the pitman arm and opens valves to extend or retract a small bore cylinder tied to the drag link. I think utilities may have the same arrangement, but again, I don't own one.

You can learn alot by walking around a salvage yard or tractor show. After you solve the actuator mystery, you will need a source of live hydraulic power. An automotive PS pump will do.

One more thing. You might want to look at a power steering box out of a pickup truck. The downside of those is you will have to make mounts, shorten the column, maybe modify the pitman arm, and spend hours getting the whole apparatus to look and work well as a transplant.

I guess the first thing to do would be to jack the front of the tractor so that the front wheels are completely off the ground and then turn the steering wheel. You should be able to turn the wheel using just your finger. If not, you need to find out why. Are the front spindles greased? will the grease zerks take new grease? How about the grease zerks on the drag link? How about the steering gear box itself? I've never seen a W series with power steering. Pretty sure the common Char-Lynn or Behlen units would not adapt, but probably something could be retro-fitted.
