I have a 62 IH 404, the lift was sortof working when I got it, now its not doing anything. I am ordering a manual, but want to check a few things before it arrives. where do you check the hydraulic level, is it connected with the transmission, and what might I look for as to why it wont' work if it isn't fluid level. it was coming and going according to the guy I got it from. i've been unable to find any level check plugs, or anything. only the fill plug on top of the trans. just need a direction to go in. thanks.

the 404 trans holds exactly 7 gallons. if you top it off, and it "hiccups" theres a .89 cent o-ring in the supply for the hitch that needs to be replaced. i don't know exactly where, i was about 2 years old when my dad fixed that problem on his 404, but i remember helping him change the hydro oil in his 2404 and it held between 5 and 7 gallons. the hydro pump could be bad. its the the front of the tractor on the right side if you were setting in the seat. replace the hydro filter too, its right behind the pump. your local IH dealer should have one for less than $5. i have a hydralic trouble shooting book (from IH) for the 404 hydralics, so feel free to email me and i'll relay what the book says.
