This is old news but last Labor Day an F-20 sold in S.E. Nebraska for $3900 at a farm auction. It was in restored condition i.e. new paint, judging from other machinery the farmer had, this F-20 was probably never in bad shape. P.S. had been added and the really unique thing was that it came from the factory with an electric starter.

Cowman, you sound quite confident that you are correct. Would your position be softened any by knowing this was a 1939 model year, the same year the H came out, that the fly-wheel & clutch casting showed no signs of alteration and that it was cast to accept the starter motor? It really makes little difference to me which way it came from the factory but if you have information and details or prices for dealers making this conversion a lot of us would find this interesting.

Do not know anything about what was available but the 1939 F20 I spent several summers cultivating with as a teenager was not electric start. Some mornings could not get it cranked and went to barn and harnessed mules and pulled it off.

Thre was a story in Red Power years ago by a fellow who had installed several. He said that Heisler supplied the bellhousing, starter and ring gear. Everthing else was up to the installer,
so price would depend on where they got the generator, battery, cables, switches, etc.

The only F-series that came from the factory with electric start were the F-12 and F-14.

That flywheel housing you'll find has a different parts number starting with an "H" or an "HE" for Heisler, not a number ending in a "D" like an IH part number of the times. The housing was in fact cast by Heisler. If you pick up a old Central Tractor catalog from the 40s or 50s you'll see the ads for them.

This topic has been discussed many times on this forum over the years and the answer is always the same. It's a well known fact that IH never offered an electric start option from the factory. Guy Fay has stated that no original factory documents exist that indicate that anything of the kind came out of Rock Island. On the other hand, it is well known that Heisler made a kit for F-20s that included all the necesary pieces to convert an F-20 in to one with electric start. These kits were very well made and certainly look factory since in actuality they were factory made; just not IH factory made.

I think $3900 is probably about right. It is costing more and more to restore them and compared to deeres of the same vintage they are still a bargain. But no, it never came from the factory with electric start but it may have been delivered new from the dealer with it instaled.
