Hello, I've just been cruising the forum trying to catch up on what I've missed over the last couple of days and spotted your pics with regards to putting a fast hitch on an MD. Kinda curious about the other tractor (Field Marshall) in the first pic. I was born in the UK and I have a friend who has a couple of Field Marshalls over there which I've had a bit of experience with. I took rather a liking to the ones my friend has but haven't seen many in North America. It looks as though it could do with a little TLC. tractorsam

I kinda thought that tractor might catch someone's eye. It did mine when I bought it about six years ago. It is a Series 3 made in the sixties. It is the only non-IH tractor that I own.

For those who don't know about Field Marshalls, they are a 40hp, single cylinder, two stroke, diesel. They were imported into Canada. I am guessing not more than 2000. I think most of them found their way to small grain country. It starts with a specially loaded shotgun shell and a whack with a hammer on the firing pin protruding from the starter chamber. As you might guess, I have not started that tractor.

Parts are still available from a successor company in East England. I would like to restore it, but it is way down on my priority list. I would be willing to listen to offers.

The series 3 are nice, although I think you'll find it's early fifties rather than the sixties. It's one of those things that is on my list to get someday when I can afford it. There are none (that I've seen/found) around my part of the world (Nova Scotia, Canada) so I'm waiting until I can either afford to have one hauled here or the equipment to go and fetch it myself.

You can also start it with a crank which is an even more alarming operation than using the starting shells (if you do feel inclined to give the shells method a go be very wary as the pipes to the cylinder head that you put the cartridges in have been known to explode after becoming corroded). They use the biggest starting handle I've ever seen and where one good strong person is good, two are even better. On the other hand they sound wonderful once you get them started.

Does it have a winch on the back or just a straight drawbar?

Thanks, tractorsam

Drawbar only.

We are not that far apart. Hop on the ferry and come to Tewksbury, MA 01876. I have all the sheet metal and some spares. Missing one front wheel.
