Clutch is destroyed by mice, crank won't turn. I am trying to save pistons and sleeves. I may resort to cutting the crank after lunch. I'm just too old to fight with this stuff anymore.

I am in the process of getting my dads 47 B running for him for christmas, It was his dads and has been sitting in a shed for 20 years. I thought that the motor was stuck tight cause I could not get it to budge with the crank. Took the head off no rust, dropped the pan no problem, opened the inspection cover and it was packed full with mouse nest. Ended up splitting the tractor to get at the clutch and while it was not as severe as the pictured motor it was rusted to the bell housing. I could not find a single opening anywhere that a rodent could get in. It totally baffles me where they got in, inspection covers were tight. Anyway I appreciate all you guys articles. I am not a tractor mechanic but I am having a lot of fun doing this..... .....makes me wonder grandpa had a F-12 too and its still sitting there in the weeds wonder how bad that ones stuck?

If memory serves, I read that an adult mouse can squeeze through a slot three-eights of an inch wide.

Mice destroy the clutch by building their nest in the clutech fingers and in the pressure plate. This makes it not release, saw it on a dump truck.

Look at the rust scale wedged between the housing and flywheel. No wonder it don't wanna turn.

So I read in another post that it's the urine that causes that. Ok, I can understand that. But how do they get in there in the first place?

They can fit in very tight areas and small holes. The clutch housing on a F-20 has an inspection hole that is easy prey for mice. I had a radiator cap dislodged from my F-20 and the mice made home to the whole radiator, head and engine block. I'll send pictures later tonight if I have time.

It was a serious question. I have no idea how a rodent can get into an enclosed space inside a transmission and do damage to a metal part like a clutch.

Remember,I'm tractor stupid, so I'm trying to learn.

Hi Mike,
Mice couldn"t get into the transmission unless a cover is missing or something. However, the clutch is in a dry area (no oil as there is in the transmission) between the engine and transmission, and usually has a hole in the bottom for any errant oil to drip out of, or an inspection cover. There are lots of ways mice could get in there. No effort is made to seal the clutch housing since it is dry anyway.

Any hole big enough to put the tip of your little finger into is big enough for 30 mice to get into. Holes even smaller the smaller one can get into and ya they destory stuff fast.

Do you remember the Alfred Hitchcock movie "The Birds"?

Maybe the rodents have gained a higher form of knowledge!!! :>)

Hey Mike, their little legs aren't stong enough and when they ride the clutch, they let it slip and that takes it out. Harley

That's what I'm worried about with mine. Thanks for the pictures Howard. It's amazing what a mice and their urine can do to metal. I thought the flywheel could be stuck to the bellhousing from those rascals.
