Having never owed or really used a tractor, I am looking for information on how the hydraulics work on Farmall 504 that I bought. It has two control handles on the right side. Looking to mount a 3 point hitch and need to know how to set this up, how many cylinders I need, type of connectors, you name it. I have the owners manual but am looking for something more detailed.

The lift cylinder on a 504 is inside the cast iron box under the seat. It is all set up with draft and position control. The rockshaft (lifting arms) are integrated and come from the same box. If you have the valves, you must have the rest of it. Sounds like somebody removed the external portions of the fast hitch or 3pth. The 504 came with either setup. You will have to go to a salvage yard to get the missing pieces. Get a parts book to see what it is you are missing. If you want details, it is all there.

I suppose you could go after market and use a hitch made for a H or M but that system is inferior to the IH product and it won't add value to your tractor.

There is no sign of a 3 point hitch on this machine. Was looking at the 3 pt listed on YT site, but was unable to get info from them that proved helpful. The only thing that is visible on the machine are the lines and male couplers. The previous owner said he used the hydraulics and the rear work well but not enough power from the front and he had trouble with lifting his bails, as the whole set up was to small for the application. Other problems is that the battery doesn't charge and the PTO keeps turning when not engaged.

Well it must be a Farmall with some delete options. What letters are included with the serial number?

If you want a rear hitch, you should get the parts book. Prepare a list of everything that is missing and start contacting tractor salvage yards. Your IH dealer can get you a service manual for the hydraulics. That will be helpful as well.

Warner,

Lots and lots and lots of those little tractors came equipped with "blanks" and a standard hitch.

Think his easiest way out is to just get one of those aftermarket outfits and bolt 'er on to the rear axles.

Allen, I don't doubt that but he said he had the valves and they were in the right place. I assume there must be "guts" inside the hydraulics box under the seat.

I suppose "blanks" must also mean freeze plugs where the rock shaft goes into the box. He must have some sort of diminshed hydaulic system. I'd be inclined to sell the tractor and buy one equipped the way I wanted it.

Wardner,

They had the front hydraulics, just not the piggy back pump. The housing under the seat was cast blank with no openings for the rockshaft or the hitch controls. The remotes system was still there, just not plumbed into a second hitch system.

I've seen lots of 'em in the salvage yards in this country. Used mostly for hay fields, I would guess.

Pretty much a "tide-over" from the H and M days for some old farmers. "Sure don't need that silly hitch". :>)

another possibility is the tractor had a former life carrying a string bean harvester. i have a 240 that had 3 hydraulic handles and valves but no fast hitch. i checked with the former owner and he said it had carried a chisholm-rider bean harvester. that also explained the second serial number, which was prefaced with "cr". i think some 404s and 504s were used that way, as well as 240s and 340s.
