Am having trouble removing the water pump driving stud (48029DA) on my 1940 H. The nut comes right off, but cannot budge the stud. Does it just reverse out, and if so, how can I apply force without damaging the water pump shaft? Thanks for any help, John

Well I just had the same problem on my SM finally got it out this morning by using a LP tourch and heating the area around the stud. I used LP because I didn't want to get to much heat transfer to the water pump shaft. That sucker will have never seize on it when it goes back in. Painting starts tomarrow.

It is tapered. a tap with a light hammer should start it.

Nebraska cowman, thanks. I've been tapping for two days , on and off, and have used penatrating oil. Should I just "Bang the Hell" out of it? John

controled blows John. You might have to support the backside with a heavy hammer but a sharp rap with a 16 oz hammer should get it's attention. Like was said, leave the nut partway on so you don't damage the threads.

Using the big hammer is not a good idea unless you are will to replace both parts.

Not to dispute what The Cowman says, but do you have new studs and are they really tapered ? I've never tried to replace them, but the parts book shows a lock washer associated with teh stud. Seems odd for a tapered pin to have a lock washer. The illustration looks like there are hex flats on the pins. The end that goes into the hub does not look tapered.

If the new parts are tapered, is there enough of the pin left to thread ? If so, you could try pulling on it with a nut and a sleeve while tapping on the backside.

Greg

Greg, Cowman: The threads for the nut are there.
It seems to me that the tapered pin should go into the hole threads first, then the lockwasher and the nut will hold the pin in. This is the single pin that holds the fan support onto the water pump shaft. John
