I just want to get your opinion as to what you think is the best most reliable engine kit for my 560 Diesel. I'm going to have the head rebuilt at a very good machine shop but I want the best kit for the out of frame overhaul on the block. It's going to happen very soon. Lance

Resist the temptation to order the engine kit first, before inspecting the engine. You"ll need to know what size bearings to get and whether to get oversize sleeves. The oversize sleeves are to prevent the problem that Hugh was talking about. With my 282, I waited until the machine shop told me what they thought they needed, then ordered the kit. Afterwards, when they were installing the sleeves, they wanted .002 oversize on a couple of them. Shoot, we already had the kit, etc. So now I have two standard sleeves left over. It would have been easier (and cheaper) had I ordered the kit with the proper sleeves right away. I"m a little miffed at the machine shop, because their oversight cost me some $.

Paul: Crops all off, I suppose? Are you folks as saturated with water as we are. We had one of the finest growing seasons ever, just the right amount of moisture every week, then come time to harvest corn and beans, it started raining and has never stopped. I heard a radio host say yesterday was the first time since Sept. we had two days in a row without rain. I'm not disputing him.

Back in the mid 70s, I had a new neighbor. Everyone seemed to know him but me, and also knew his credentials as a top diesel mechanic for a large company. My 560D and 300 both needed engine kits, thus another neighbor introduced us. This guy regularly worked on large marine deisels. He checked and told me what he could get kits for, and gave me a quote on both tractors. I guess your telling me he was not the sharpest knife in the drawer. I've always suspected that, however the job he did on 300 was excellent. I think it was a case of not being familiar with 282 diesels.

Back in those days I was busy milking cows, all mechanical work got farmed out. At the time, I though the IH dealer was getting a bit heavy and it wouldn't hurt him to miss a couple. But you know, he would have stood behind his engine work.

Hi Hugh. I"ve been thinking about you lately- I need to zip an e-
mail off to you one of these days.
Yes, I finally got the rest of my crops off just recently, spread manure yesterday, and have all my tillage to do yet. It"s been a heck of a summer. Had a lot of rain all summer, so things really did well. Hard to make dry hay, though. My big square baler did a lot this summer, making over 7100 bales. The most I have ever done before in one season was about 2900. Got stuck a couple of times with the baler too because of all the rain- 4WD CIH 7140. Also nearly got stuck with the combine in wheat fields in August. It is a bummer when it rains all fall, like you said.
On those 282 engines, IH had different classes of fit, marked right on the deck of the block, presumably so that the correct sleeve could be installed for the right amount of press fit. I don"t know why they didn"t just make them "right". On one block you could have two or three different size bores for the sleeve. Mind you, they weren"t much different from each other- maybe .0005 or .001. Nowadays, a machine shop in the know will order .002 oe .005 over and bore the block for the correct amount of interferrence fit.
Do you think your IH dealer would have stood behind the 560 even after 1000 hours? Wow! Also sounds like another case of bad employee (or at least unskilled, unknowledgable) costing you a bunch of money (the teen that didn"t shut it down in time). Then they wonder why you can"t pay them $20/hr. Paul

Lance: I can't give you the right information, however do your homework on these. I'm not sure the problem still exists, but back in the 1970s there were aftermarket kits that gave problems.

The sleeves didn't fit tight, movement allowed them to break off at top, piston pulled the sleeve down into crankcase. Problem occured big time when piston came back up. It didn't go straight up.

I had a 560, got close to 10,000 hours on the original sleeves and pistons. The aftermarket kit I bought, put two pistons in middle of barn yard at less than 1,000 hours. It was working on a silage blower. I know of a few other 282s and 188s that did this. 188 is just 2/3 of a 282. Now they will give you warning in time to shut them down. In my case it was a teenager, and he ran for help, leaving the tractor running. The tractor was still running when he got back, hole in block, and two pistons out in the barn yard.

Do your home work is all I can say. When I rebuilt my 656 I took it right to IH, no more damn cheap rebuilds for me.
