Wow look at that oil pressure... uh oh big leak

I have an old Super A with a belly mower that has been useful only as a learning experience. To date have had to rebuild carburetor, hydraulic pump, and governor along with bearings and belts on mower.

This weekend when I started it up for the first time in about two months it started fine but I noticed almost immediately that the oil pressure was very high (an aftermarket guage had been put on it and it read over 50 psi). I thought maybe the guage was bad but then noticed that oil was leaking out of the oil filter housing at both the base and top bolt hole. I figured that an oil passage must have been blocked immediately shut down.

I suspect that I didn"t inflict too much additional damage as it only ran for about 30 seconds but obviously have work ahead of me now. My question... wwhere do I start. I have various manuals and can probably sort this out the hard way but thought I would see here if anyone had any good advice (besides the advice my brother gave me when I bought it which was "sell it").

Have driven Ms that would hold 70 psi hot all day and they have same filter set up as SA so 50 psi oil pressure was not the problem.

Also, you need to know that the oil filter is a bypass filter: Oil which goes through the filter goes directly back to the pan. The bearings get their oil directly from the pump off the same gallery as the filter.

Is it cold enough to have frozen water in the oil system somewhere ?

I have to use two gaskets in mine to stop the leaking at the top of filter.

Didn't some of the old Farmalls have the oil pressure relief in the base of the filter, There are a lot of guys on this site that have a lot better memory than I, hopefully one of them will pick up on this for ya.

Hey Bongo, I think 50 psi is about right for your A. Oil leaks around the filter are notorious on these old Farmalls. When you think you have all the old rubber o-ring out that seals the canister over the filter check it twice and three times. Any of the old o-ring left in the grove at all will make it leak like a big dog. Take you a small sharp screw driver and realy dig around in that grove. Good luck. Been there

Tighten the filter.
