SMTA Antifreeze in Oil

I noticed that my SMTA had some antifreeze in the oil. At first we thought it may be the head gasket but it isn't conclusive. We took the pan off so right now we have antifreeze sitting in the block to see if it is leaking through. Is there anything else we should try? Is there any material to use to put in the engine in case there is a hairline crack somewhere?

Not uncommon for the block to crack behind the sleeve on M thru 450,Scale build up in the block causing areas that don't transfer heat equally thus causing cracks. In most of the years of M's antifreeze was to expensive, so tractors were drained on cold nites thus increasing the lime and calcium deposits. pull the pan and you might be able to see if it is leaking between sleeve and block.

Don't want to ruin your day but it's not uncommon for a head to have a crack and only leak when warmed up. Hook up a pressure tester to your radiator and put 8 lbs. of pressure in the system. With the pan off see if you can locate a leak. If it comes out of a cylinder then you know more than likely it's a headgasket or the head itself. You can borrow the pressure testers at most parts stores or make your own up with an acurate gauge. Gook luck and keep us posted.

The head has been examined at an engine rebuild shop and it is fine.

When you have it running, I would look for bubbles in the radiator. Hal

Could be the head gasket but it could also be a sleeve seal or a sleeve that has gone bad any one or all of them can cause that problem

Old,
With respect, the SMTA has dry sleeves, unless a casting was cracked, not the sleeve, the block would not leak into the pan. No coolant touches the sleeves. JimN

I had the same problem with M about 4 years ago. I pulled pan and also side plate into water jacket but was only able to determine that leak was somewhere in lower part of block. Put in 2 bottles of Prestone heavy duty stop leak and after 4 years and 2 or 3 hundred hours of work pulling logs, discing and bushhoging have had no more sign of leak.
