IH240 Round Bales?

Hello,
Just wondering if a IH240 could safely move a round bale with a 3pt spear? We're needing something large enough to take them off of the trailer when we get them here and move them to where they need to go (a few hundred yards at most). We would, of course, add weight to the front (load tires, wheel or suitcase weights).

Also, a neighbor assures me his had a locking diff. I thought Massey was pretty much the only one during this time to have that feature. Anyone?

Thanks,
Mike

Mike: A 240 will not have range in it's lift to take round bales off a trailer. I doubt if it will handle them long term anyhow. Take a look, it's really very little more tractor than a Super A, same hydraulic pump.

None of the 40-60 series tractors ever had diff lock.

My 240 wouldn't reach high enough unless it was a very low trailer. Other than that I think it might work (just because I would try it DOESN'T mean it is a good idea). Is the ground flat?
As for the locking differential, I wish I had one but my manual makes no mention of it.

I've used a 240 for a lot of things - but moving big round bales isn't one. If you weighted down the front you could probably do it but you'll be paying for it later. Just moving up in size to a 340 would make a lot of differance.

I personally have never seen a locking differential on a 240, but that doesn't mean they don't exist.
