Hey again guys! :)

Well I'm almost done and will be posting pics of my completed 100 soon!!!! :) I've been busy bead blasting parts and painting and now I'm finishing the details, doing wiring, and doing some upgrades. Added a tachometer, voltmeter, engine oil pressure, water temp, and PTO RPM guage. Now I have this little guage I want to replace but I don't know what it does? I know it plugs into the hydraulic box and I'm pretty sure it's the touch control guage but I want to know what it does and what it's supposed to register.

Is it supposed to cover a specific pressure or temp range? Is so then what? I've been replacing all of the original guages with liquid filled aftermarket guages and I have two 0-100 and 0-200 psi guages left an am hoping that I might be able to use one for this if it is in one of these ranges. It's a mylar tubing connection at the hydraulic box so I'm figuring it's a pressure guage.

Anyone know for sure? I looked in the manuals and don't see a specific band that this covers?

Patrick: Unless you have remote valve hydraulics and using hydra creeper drive, that gauge will probably never move from cold. It probably will record heat if one lets the hydraulic resovoir run low in oil, however by the time the gauge records hot in that senario, one has already cooked the pump.

Over the years I've had 3 tractors with the gauge and 3 that never had the gauge from the factory. One of the tractors with the gauge was bought new and I've yet to see it move from the cold mark. Of the three offset tractors I still have, only my Super A had the hydraulic temperature gauge. I removed that 20 years ago without any adverse effect. My 130 and 140 never had the gauge. All three of those tractors have their original pumps, touch control has never been rebuilt and hydraulics still perform as new. Secret to running one of these tractors, is every time you check the engine oil level, also check the hydraulic oil level. These do not have a very large hydraulic oil resovoir, thus even a small leak can soon empty the system, and that is the single biggest reason for hydraulic rebuild.

Most of the Super A had the gauge, however not many of the 100, 130 and 140 ever had it unless buyer requested the option for his particulr hydraulic use. Personally I'd never replace a hydraulic temperature gauge on one of these. I suspect if you delve into the matter you'll find the gauge was always an option.

Thank you much Mr. MacKay! Once again a perfect explanation and a tremendous help!!!! :)

I shall install a 0-100 temp guage here as it should be more sensitivefor this use.

May I Expand This Question? in reply to Patrick Martin, 11-17-2006 20:58:21
Why does some tractors have the temp. gauge and some don"t? My Super A has never had one, but I see some on other tractors and not on others. I assume it was optional?

It is a temperature guage for the touch control.I do not know the ranges.I have seen them for sale for around $100.00 or more. I dont think it had numbers but just green and red range. At least thats what mine has but it doesn't work.

You can buy them at the IH dealer for somewhere around $40.00.

Thanks for the reply Banjo! :)

Does your's have a length of mylar tubing going up to the guage?
That's funny if it's a temp guage that uses a communication tube instead of a thermocouple.

Anyone have a pic of theirs?????

A fluid expansion based gauge is common in older equipment. They have a bulb like sensor with a waxy working fluid that expands when heated (like a thermostat with that small cartridge to move the valve). The pressure in the capillary tube (usually covered with a sheath of plastic) id connected to a Bourdon (a guy's name from wayback history) tube in the gauge that connects to gears. as the Bourdon tube is pressurized, it expands and uncurls. This force drives a set of gears moving the needle.
Thermocouples are useful, but far more delicate in a vibrating situation. Due to the small amount of voltage they produce, an amplifier is needed to power a meter, adding complexity and cost. Remember when these were new, there were no comercially used transistors, it would have been a tube type amplifier. JimN

No it has a flexable steel line. I assume it has a thermocoupler in the touch control block. I don't have a digital camera to take pics.

Well no biggie bud :)
Thank you so much for the replys and explanation of what it is. Now I at least know what I'm facing. I'm sure it doesn't require more than a 150-200 degree guage and I can figure what to do from there. Someone else might chime in that may know too?

So how's your 100 coming along?
