Free Gas Cap Question

I received a free gas cap for my Farmall Cub and H. I compared the Cub's original gas cap with the one on my 1954 John Deere 60 and they're identical. Should I be concerned with pressure building up in the JD 60 tank? Was the settlement to replace non-venting caps only a Farmall problem? Thanks.

ALL IHC gas caps had vents. Even the low profile OEM caps from back in the 30's, 40's & very early 50's. The reason for the free safety triple baffle gas cap program was to supply the new safety caps with the quarter turn feature to allow any pressure build up to be released slowly before removing the cap from the filler neck and therefore no raw fuel could be drawn out of the tank. This is similar to a radiator cap. The actual cap itself is the same as IH used from about 1950 or '51 but had a second catch at a right angle to the spring that holds the cap on. IHC used the triple baffle cap on all the number series tractors with metal tanks. I'm not aware of ANY other tractor manufacturer that used these triple baffle caps, Most I'm familiar with used a cap similar to the single baffle cap IH stopped using around 1950. The reason for the switch to the triple baffle was to prevent raw fuel from streaming out of the vent and staining the paint and causing a fire hazard. The lawsuit that prompted the program was caused by a triple baffle cap that had blocked vents and pressurized the gas tank. Your JD has the gas tank over the engine just like the tractor model that caused the lawsuit, but the tank is not as close to the engine. ANY gas tank with a blocked vent can have this problem. Late Model Cars & trucks don't have vented caps but the tanks themselves are vented through a carbon filter cannister to absorb flammable fuel vapors.

I think previous posters have indicated that the difference is baffles in the cap to prevent gas from coming out of the top.

NO, Even the low profile cap, the 1/2" tall one used in the '30's & '40's had a single baffle, and a chamber to capture liquid gasoline that overflowed the tank. The tall caps have ALWAYS been "Triple Baffle Caps", with three chambers. The difference is in the catch or locking strap at the bottom of the cap that goind inside the filler neck, making the new cap impossible to remove quickly. You have to turn a quarter turn (90 deg) lift, then turn an additional 90 deg. If someone would post a picture of their old cap & a new one it's obvious.

When i recieved mine for the super a, it was about 3 inches tall, and had 2 vent holes in the top. my factory cap original '46 farmall gas cap, with "buy clean fuel keep it clean" stamped on it was only about half an inch tall had 1 vent hole in the top and 1 baffle, which it always leaked out of when the tank was full. hope that helps answer your question.
