We have a W6 (gas) that we use as our primary chore tractor (hey.. its our only tractor!)...

Anyways... last week it didn't want to start.. Took the starter off, and there was a mouse nest in there.. so.. cleaned that out.. But was looking for the solenoid, as it seems like that is what the problem is...

I just ordered the parts & services manuals from here, but was wondering if someone might be able to tell me where I can locate the solenoid, as it will be a few weeks until the manuals get here...

My driveway needs to be freed of the all the lovely Saskatchewan snow, as well as our sheep need a bale replaced:)

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Jen

First of all you don't have a solenoid, the button you push is the switch. If the starter spins but will not engage, it's the bendix or starter drive unit giving you the problem. Could be it just needs freed up, starter could be dragging and not comming up to speed.

The switch to energize the starter is what you use to start tractor by using your foot or hand on it.

Do you pull on a rod with a circle on the end to start it? If so, the solenoid (of such) is mechanical and is mounted on the starter.

I think you can take it apart and rotate parts or replace it.

I've only myself started it a couple of times...But yes.. you gotta pull out a little rod.. then press the starter button...

If the tractor is still the original 6 volt system, there is no solenoid. Many 12 volt conversions did not use a solenoid either. Make sure the battery is fully charged, and also make sure ALL of the electrical connections are "clean, bright, and tight".

Its a 12 volt system now...Thanks for the heads up that there might not be a solenoid!

Got a new battery & new cables this fall..(got new rear tires too.. but didn"t get a chance to put those on!)

A neighbour suggested a solenoid problem... But it spins.. just doens"t want to engauge... So.. might be something else too... The starter"s at the shop now... So.. hopefully its something easy

Used her a couple of days before she stopped starting...

I dont know what is worse... not having a tractor to use.. or having a swarm of bees making a hive in the clutch housing...

We"d like to keep her in running shape.. and when we can afford to get a newer tractor, we"d like to restore her...
