I regularly visit both this and the John Deere forum. Upon each visit there seems to be two to three times as many posts on this Farmall-IH forum as on the JD forum. Why do you think that is?

My dads first tractor was a H. My first was a H.He always talks about being able to make them run with bailing wire and a pair of pliers.I'm a newbie to this too as to I am 26.Iwas 24 when i bought my H fixed it up painted it and sold it to a hard life on a grain auger. Now it sits just down from my dads house(you can here the govenor kick in when they unload) every time we drive by he talks about it. Now I have a M to work on.I don't ask alot ,but i read up on the news every couple days. These guys are some friendly people. Red has a better shine

I'm from Georgia and there were a lot of fords, Ih, and olivers in the area during the late 50's to late 60's. The Ih dealer and oliver dealer went out of business so mostly anything sold from the 70's on would be John Deere. Massey Ferguson and ford New Holland.

If you really want to know, do a google search under "Old Oak Farmalls" and scroll down on the left to where it says "JD's arent all that". You WILL see why they dont have much to say. Enjoy!!

The guys are right, this is an exceptional group of gentlemen with a vast amount of knowledge. At least when I needed help they were there. And everyone has to remember, the green tractors are hiding in the grass, so the red ones don't see them. Resulting in the fact that the owners can't find them either.

I would offer that there seems to be many of the green collectors more interested in showing off
their machines rather than working them. If you
work them (and who among us wouldn't rather be
sitting behind a smoother running and sounding red machine?) then you are always looking for
information and experience on how best to keep these red machines working with the dependabil- ity of the past for the years of use ahead.

Thats cause Go Big Red is a lifestyle in NE. It involves heart, commitment, style, respect for the past while also forging the anvil of tomorrows.

Think I hear my H calling to me to come and watch the Huskers playing on TV with er.

Both forums seem to be busier than others, of course Ford is divided into 3 groups. It probably has alot to do with the fact that IH was the most popular built up until around 1960, so theres alot of them out there. Then of course there is the TA which seems to be a very popular topic here.

In the area I live, just about everyday you will see a old farmall doing work of some sort. If I were to list all the Farmalls that I know of within 10 miles of me that still work for a living you would think I was pulling your leg.

I think the traffic on the Farmall forum shows that it is just not in my area that this is the case.

The last JD A I saw working was my Grandfather's back in the 1970's, the Last Farmall M was yesterday.

I just recently started restoring my H. I drove it when I worked on my grandfathers farm 15 years ago. It is pretty ruff, ok, it is a bucket of rust. My mother bought it from my grandfather two years ago with the same intentions. Grandpa was called home this summer so I thought now would be a great time to restore it. Yes, us newbies (I am 31) are much more interested in Red because us po' folk could not afford the Green stuff. Seriously, the Red brings old and young togther, maybe a little common ground we all need more of. My two cents.

leon: Cowman hit it right on. I've been around this forum for 6 years now, nowhere on here is there the freindship and comradery as there is on Farmall-IH forum pages.

You just watch what happens at Christmas, massive amounts of seasons greetings on Farmall page. Not saying it never happens on the other pages, but not to the extent it does here. That alone gives you some idea of the caliber of folks your dealing with. It's the people who make anything like this work.

Hugh, Leon, Everybody...all I can say is that this web site, and the Farmall forum in particular, has opened up a friendly, exciting, meaningful new world for me. I feel like I have friends around the country (and in Canada) who are quick to answer any question and are willing to share their knowledge about Farmall engines, electrical systems, transmissions, sheet metal and every other component you can find on a tractor.

My wife gets a kick out of it when I start talking about Nebraska Cowman from Wellfleet or El Toro from Maryland or CNKS from Kansas or Hugh MacKay from Ontario (THINK that's right). Then there's the incomparable Bob M. from the Rochester area--very helpful to me on my SM brakes. And Janicholson (Minnesota, right?) who's also been helpful to so many. And there's BillyinStoughton, who I've met personally, who is a another great guy I admire a lot.

One word about green. When I was a kid I used to nearly get into fist fights with my best friend, who was green. But I outgrew that. And now I just good-naturedly spar with my farmer friend Bobby, who farms with green, collects green, and who has given me a spot in his equipment shed and his shop for my Super M. In fact, it sits right next to his M--the only red he has. And there is no better man, no kinder man than Bobby.

Just one more comment about green. The boys from Moline have done a lot of things right in the marketplace, when a lot of other companies have developed myopia and stopped listening to their customers and shot themselves in the foot. I used to work for Jacobsen Division of Textron at Jake's corporate headquarters in Racine, WI. We were the number two player in the golf and professional turf maintenance equipment market (Toro was number one; Ransomes was three.) John Deere entered the market and the other powers laughed. They're not laughing any more.

Red, green. Hey, both go real well together, especially at Christmas, which will be here before we know it.

THANKS to all you guys.

David

Because the johm deere owners are too busy fixing their equiment =)
Becaus more newbies are interested in red, then green
because they have several jobs to pay for their overpriced equipment
they went to the dealer to buy more parts
reds are already done for the season

I just dont like JD's. green green green. they act like they are it and no one else even exists.
they sell all kinds of stupid toys and crap at serverly inflated prices. $3 for a little rubber keychain, wth?

It's just a bunch of friendly folks with a common interest. Several of the people seem to know each other, so it's almost like sitting around the cafe with a cup of coffee. And it's a lot more cheerful than the morning news.

Beats watching the "boob tube". I would rather read this than listen to the crap on TV. See, also like to type on, and on...Good friendly/knowledgable bunch here. Folk like to share info/maybe boast a little too - the hen that lays a golden egg has a right to cackle. Some heartwarming stories also. A wonderful way to communicat across the country with a wonderful hobby/way of work for IH folks. Sometimes even the "GREEN" word appears, and we don"t mind - least ways me. My dad had an H that we used for tobacco. Great little tractor. Local guy who purchased it has it better than dealer lot condition and a wonderful restored JD spreader w/it. See, me likes to type! Good folks, good info, NUTS, my coffee is cold.

that's what it is.if you have been in more than one club, check out the international harvester collectors club and you will meet the greatest people on earth! i think that there is far less "mine is better than yours" than in some groups. also, i believe that the antique international tractors for the most part are more affordable than a lot of john deeres are and thus, more people working on said internationals that have to do the repairs themselves, etc. i know some john deere guys that are real good folks also, but i have had more negative comments about my international collecting from john deere guys than i have ever given to them about thiers. you know, the usual "why didn't you bring a good green tractor" stuff, etc. i have a couple of both and my family had ih so i get along with those tractors a little better. when i started collecting i had the choice of buying a stuck d john deere for 2500.00 or a stuck 22-36 for 200.00. the wife likes the internationals when i tell her that.
