Hi all just wondering if anyone has any thoughts.I changed my positive battery cable on my tractor this fall and now that its cooler (40deg) it turns over so slow it wont start.Last winter it turned over better at 20 deg.The tractor is an IH 250A paytractor with the d-239 motor.Im not sure if it is coincidence or what I cleaned ground etc and it still cranks slow. The largest cable size TSC had was 2 guage, the origional was larger but looked pretty rough. Not sure if the cable could be too small or is my battery or starter going. Also it has an 850ca car battery in it is there something larger I should be using Thanks Jason

# 1/O gauge wire is what is needed (or fatter) aluminum conducts about 1/2 as well as copper per crossectional area of cable. I looked it up. Aluminum also stress cracks more and corrodes faster (especially around copper connectors) I would never go there. JimN

Jason, I have a mid 40's A that needed rewired and when I did it, I went to a electric supply sore and got #6 aluminum wire!!!! it comes as 6/3 wire so you will have some waste, but it works well!! I know the guys on here call for 00 wire, but when switched to alum. I do not believe it is necessary!! also I am still only pushing 6 vt's

You didn't say if you had 6 volt or 12 volt. If you have 6 volt, then your cable is too small. You can get one made up at Napa. Get at lease a size 0 or better yet a double aught (2-0)

This is a good place to say it twice---those cables for a 12 volt system will NOT WORK on a a 6 volt system. Make sure you replumb with the large wire as mentioned above. The tractor will not turn over as designed with those small cables in the 6 volt system.
