I tell ya what Jimmy. I got the first tire on, walked around back to look at it, and just happened to look up and noticed it was about 3 inches inside the shop door. Got out the old tape and did some quick figuring before I put the second one on. It does go in and out, but ya better have er lined up about right.

I am the originall pack rat, and I just happened to run across these nine bolt hubs off my old 560 duals that I had back in the day and they fit right on the M. I wanted to put them on the outside facing in or else turn the rims around with them facing in so the tires wouldn't be quite that wide, but then the weights wouldn't fit over the hubs. I still have to get the weights on, about four to a side, but gotta wait till the sil is off next weekend to help do some lifting. My back knows better. Harley

Doesn't that make for a lot of stress on the axels though. I have seen those old M axels break from chains across them. I mean a lot of them are 60 years old now.

Harley,

Is the fontend on your M the stock one? If it is are you using the stock rims and hubs? Reason I ask it looks like you have wider tire than would fit on mine. If you don't have the original hubs what kind are on there?

Re: M WIDE - now, M loaders in reply to Harley, 11-14-2006 09:06:31
Thank you for posting the photos. Evidently a Westendorf loader and looks good. I've become interested in loader options for M's, since last Saturday one of my wife's cousins said his neighbor widow had an M with loader sitting in her barn...been there for a, "few years." He's checking into it for me (I hope), but I doubt that loader is as good as yours. So I'm suddenly interested in M's, loaders for them, photos of same, etc.

Wonder if there is anything I should watch out for in an M with a loader? Probably if it works fine, the price is good, then what else is there.....

Dennis

The only thing to watch for is who built the loader. It would be difficult to count the number of companies that built loaders. Most of those companies are no longer in business, and replacement parts are virtually non-existant. Also, some of those older loaders were a very poor design to start with and would create stress on the tractor where the tractor wasn't built to stand up to it.

This loader is a Westendorf TA 26 and I have had it on an 806, 560, and this is the second M. No fabricating necessary. Just unbolt and bolt back up again. The front end is a Norden I got from Cowman with the old stock Farmall three hole hubs, and the front tires are 11LX16 aircraft tires from Gensco out of Houston, Texas. They are very good with our thorns down here in the Ozarks as the thorns won't penetrate the 20 ply tires. The only down side is ya have to keep it under 225 MPH as that is what the tires are rated for. Says so right on them. The rims I cut in two right around one side of the indentation in the center of it with a torch, laid a 2" wide piece of 3/16 strap iron in the middle and welded up both sides both inside and outside. This makes the rims about 8" wide and works real good. I have these "home made" rims on both M's with wider tires on front so weight on the frontend don't bother anything. As far as weight on the rear axles goes, I don't do anything with this but feed hay and move stuff and don't use chains, and it isn't near as heavy as say an old 2MH cornpicker or something. Harley

Those Westendorfs are very well engineered and designed loaders. I've been to the plant where they are built. The whole operation is quite impressive. If I were in the market for a new outfit, I wouldn't even consider anything else.
