Well my old computer has been getting long in the tooth ( For me any way). So I decided it was about time for a upgrade.
I have been building my own systems for 11 years now. I am on my 6th one now. I have been shopping out components for a day or so. I cant do it any more. I cant beat them. For what I wanted and with a upgrade to Windows Vista I would have to plunk $2000 into it.
So I made a trek onto the Dell web site. Now I had quit building for the kids and wife years ago, so I have purchased from them before but not for ME!
Well I have a new Dell on the way for me now. Got pretty much all I wanted and a free upgrade to Vista for less than $800. Cant beat that with a stick.
Heck I remeber paying that much for a few sticks of EDO ram.
Oh oh I just thought about it. I have 2 sicknesses. One for red tractors and one for computers. Wife does not like ether one :-)

Any of you guys besides me use a Mac?

I've used them for years and had good luck. I started using them because I used Photoshop and taught that for awhile.

I"ve been all Mac. I had an iMac, which my mother still has, but now have a Power Mac G-5, I think. (OS X)
I"m pretty sure that it can do anything any of the others can, but no one else speaks "Mac", so it can be "irrigating" sometimes.
I like it though.
Paul

Well heres the thing. I been into IBM's for sooo long It would be hard to switch now. I need to keep up with these things cause 100% of the probably 20-30 repairs/year I do on pc's are IBMS, never had a mac... I guess theres something to say about that. Then again, they've all been windows boxes, which says something also..
So until the macs need repaired I'll stick with my windows/ibm machines..

Well, I feel for ya now. I have had 2 Dells, both were the biggest pile of crap ever seen on the planet. Idiots sent it without a sound car, didnt hook up the cd drive and sent me a cracked screen. Raised enouhg h311 with them and they finally sent me another. I sear it was a used unit based on the number of scrathes on the case and they never bothered to send a keyboard or monitor on that one. It took threatening legal action to get my money back out of them. Oh yea the second one wouldnt even power up.I know people who have had good luck and love their Dells, but my experience is enough taht Ill never buy one from them.

Yeah, sad isn't it? It's been this way for a few years now. I kind of went half way on my last build, I bought a SFF bare bones machine and then plunked the goodies I wanted into it. I was able to get on par with Dell.

Just the way of the world I guess.

I stop beating them about 3 years ago.
HOWEVER!!
When you build your own, you know what you got. You dont have to fish around for weeks trying to find a driver for that dell modem 3 years from now when you upgrade to the newest O/S.
You can choose the brands you want. I depsise Maxtor, and now that WD has bought maxtor, I'm learning to like seagate better (can't beat that warranty or their disk densities).
One thing that ticks me off, is you see $1800 in FREE software. They probably pay $50 At the Most for the software and feed you some line of crap that it's worth $1800.
I never buy software, I refuse. There's only been 2 programs I have ever used that lived up to my expectations and actually decided to donate to. They dont do anything for you if you have issues, no refunds or anything (especially if you buy it online). With some many variables from computr to comoputer, you are stuck in the mudd if you have problems, just ask all the former win98se users. Been there, done that.
I'm currently on a 2000 box with a Tbird 1.3gig, 768meg ran, and 2 terabytes of storage. It's time to upgrade the cpu/mobo/ram, but I've been out of it for a while and Cant decide. I figured I would wait a year of so until vista has at least one service pack and someone has figured out a way to beat microsoft's protection.
Maybe I'll opt for linux this time. I used to run linux and still use it on my firewall/router box, but nobody developed drivers for my cap card that I can't live without.
Computer Suck at one point or another, and its just a matter of time before I run into more idiots who have no idea what a registry is or a domain name. Like cars, if you dont know anything about it, maybe you shouldnt own it.
A world of "as long as it works and I'm an idiot" society.
Sorry, I just get tired of stupid people who take no initiatize to learn anything about an item they just spent a grand or more on.
I'm crazy and cheap but in the rare event I do buy something new, The first thing I do and love to do is read the owners manual. They keep getting smaller and smaller!! I hate this disposable society!!

I was just going to do a Mother board/ cpu thing again until I found out my case Power supply is out dated, AGP is out the door to PCI exspress, Ram has changed again. So I pretty much had to redue it all any way.

Aww heck the wife will get it next year any way then I can build mine again :-)

I have been building my computers for years but you can buy a nice new one now for much less than it costs to build it. I purchased a HP Media computer with an Athlon 64 processor for $500. I sure couldn’t build one for that.

Yep. I got the Pentium 805 D dual core procesesor.
That should do better than my old AMD XP 1600.
Not top of the line but good enough.

I upgraded the ram to 2 gig and got the best video card I could. Added all the readers and ports I could.

Then down graded to just a cd rom as I have a great DVD burner I can put in it.
Just went with the 17 inch monitor instead of a fancy flat screen.

The kicker was Vista. Just to buy the upgrade will be over $200 so wanted to make sure I got that included for free.

I wish you luck with your Dell, they go through spells of quality and junk manufacturing. My colleague just lost several months of work with a Dell HDD failure one month after the warranty ended.
I have an HP/Compac in my office that is stunning, and an HP next to me now (p4 1.8) that have been very good to me. JimN
