What tractor should my Brother-in-Law get?

My B.I.L. was going to get an M because it was nice and shiney, and it ran well. Fully restored. But the deal didn't happen for various reasons. Which is good, because he has a little 6 acre farm he is putting a tangerine orchard into. He likes my H, which is sitting on his farm, but he wants a tractor already restored to replace his '48 Fergy that runs hot. So, the tractor is only going to do light work around his farm. He, like me, doesn't know squat about tractors. But he likes red ones, like me. So, what should we be looking for? I've seen the O-4 in Guy Fay's book with the cool fairings for orchards, but I have a feeling those are rare and expensive. Is there a number series that is basically the same thing?

Thanks for any suggestions.

You can get by with a row crop for a couple of years but once the grove is established the narrow rows and close planting will make the H, M or even A or 140 not practical. Your going to need something with a 2 or 3pt like a 300 or 350 to work in the tight quarters of citrus or even a low profile narrow. Citrus are shallow rooted and don't do well with deep tillage so check with what other people are useing and get a tractor to meet your needs. Allan

the fergie should be a nice tractor so why not drain the rad and fill with vinegar and let it set then backflush. use a good thermometer to check what the temp realy is as maybe there is a bad guage. is the fan belt tight and are the fins clean?

I will recommend a super A, , Super C, or any of the 100 or 200 series tractors. They are small, have live hydraulics, take up less spcae, and are the right size for the acres. An "O" series farmall will be unhandy and far less used than thos above. Getting what a person wants is not the same as what they need. Learning what is needed is 3/4 of finding out what you want. It works in marrage as well. JimN

Mike did you get the Jpegs for the splitting stands? If so do you need the full CAD drawings? JimN

I sure didn't. I don't know if you saw my message for a different e-mail.

weare.mikenjen@sbcglobal.net

My website is offline while they get some server issues resolved. So those e-mails associated with it aren't working right now.

He better go visit some farms to see how they are doing. If he doesent know which tractor to get better see how the crop is grown and what type machinery goes with it.
