Brother-in-law and I picked up a M today with a HYSLER overdrive (found six different spellings). Arm come out of the clutch side of tractor. It is misssing the external rods and shift lever, there is a bracket mounted to the tank support to attached linkage.

Questions - proper spelling for H????? ????? ??
Anyone have any drawings or manuals avl?
Parts, what should be inside. When we move the arm nothing happens.

What does it actually overdrive, all gear ranges, partial gear ranges?

Thx skk

Heisler, M&W. Behlen all made what is called the 9 speed transmission. They mated a shiftable larger gear to the constant mesh gear on the top shaft, also smaller gear onthe lowershaft. they all were about a 30% increase in the 4 speeds.as 5th is direct on the top shaft it was not affected. Linkage on the right M&W,left side linkage Heisler. Cable operated, Behlen

I grew up in the area where Harry Heisler lived. His house is located between Hudson and Cedar Falls, about 90 miles west of Dubuque. He was a mechanical genius and built a factory but I don't recall what else he built since that was 50 years ago. Another farmer in that area reputably developed the John Deere "rollamatic" (sorry for swearing, will not do that again).

Local farmers in that area loved that overdrive in those H and M Farmalls; wish I had one in my H.

Thx: LA your are obviously right. Your reply led me to this:

He married Mary Jane Wells, and his only son Harry Frederick Heisler (my dad) married Agnes Brown (Pennsylvania Dutch) and hatched me. My parents (dad was an inventor) developed Heisler Manufacturing in Waterloo and later,Hudson, IA. Their tractor repair and upgrading parts are in high demand by antique tractor buffs since they are not available. If I had the money, I'd start a small custom shop (I've the know how and skills) for those tractor buffs wishing they had that governor, live power take off, overdrive, etc.).

Skk, When I was about a freshman in hi school, another guy and I hauled junk for spending money. Your folks had an old tractor sitting outside by the factory building. Walked into the office to ask about junking the tractor and your mom came out of her office to see me. I swear she looked to be 8' tall and I was so scared that I could hardly speak. She was nice, but turned us down.

There was a very good article a while back in Red Power magazine about the Heisler Company. Think it was 2 or 3 issues ago.

It was Heisler. The company was in Hudson, Iowa.

The overdrive provided a second range for 1-4, the PTO and the hydraulics. The new speeds were between original 4 and 5.

It is a heisler I believe and it over drives all except 5th gear had an H with one but then there is a M&W overdrive too depends on which side your shifter comes out.

There was a steam locomotive builder, Heisler Locomotive Works, in PA. Not sure they ever got into anything else.

Then there's the fork-lift people...Hyster?

Those are the only two similar names that occur to me.

Dennis
