350 utility hydraulic problem

I have a 350 utility that I recently purchased & put a loader on it. I have to fill the reservoir almost full for the loader to raise all the way up. When I lower the loader the fluid pukes out the vent. The pump also sounds like it is under pressure when all the controls are in neutral. I can here it pull the engine down & then it releases. Anybody got any ideas?

Since your loader worked OK on another 350U, it probably should on this one, too. We will assume it has double-acting hydraulic cylinders at this point, until you tell us differently. Given this, the most likely cause of the fill/dump problem that you are describing is having the control valve set for a single-acting cylinder. At the front of the control valve there is what the Operators Manual describes as a pin (turned with a 9/16" wrench) that has to be set to "D" for proper operation of your loader.

Having the engine bog down the hydraulic system when its valves are centered is usually caused by a clogged orifice in the pressure control/safety valve block (the rear, inboard valve block, with no handle, assuming your 350U's hydraulics are as they came from IH). The cure is to remove the block and clean the orifice. The most common root cause of this is a dirty hydraulic system; you might be money ahead to pull the reservoir and clean the screen (underneath the cover), etc., while you're at it. If you do this, be sure to lift the cover straight up, and have a place to set it figured out; the screen is easily damaged and expensive. Best to get someone strong to help with this job if you can.

Good luck, and let us know how you make out.

Hi, The oil being thrown out is usualy caused by air trapped, possibly in your cylinders. Clean the suction sreen and operate it with less oil for a while and see if it gets better. Most common problem with the valves is the shaft that changes them from double acting to single is not fully located in either position. Good Luck, Chuck

First, let me say I am no 350 Utility expert. Having admittied that embarrasing deficiency, (which explains much about the rest of the flawed facets of my life,) it sounds like your hydraulic reservoir is not large enough to hold the amount of fluid required to work your new loader to its limits.
But what do I know? I've achieved no higher status than that of a drug store soda jerk, after 31 years of trying. (Well, not really. Actually, I am a rocket scientist and a brain surgeon. Well, not really.) mike

That also sounded to me like it could be my problem but the loader came off another 350 (High) Utility that I am restoring & it always worked fine. Ed
