Been raising cows off and on for several years, and allways had good luck up till this year when I lost a black angus to annaplasmosis. ( I never heard of it till it was too late) I have a Jersey cow that I bought bread, and today was the day for one more to come into the world. I went to check her this morning and found her laying in the pasture with a nose and one leg sticking out her rear. The vet decided to be a jerk today and refused to come "all the way out there", and I figured I didn't any other choice, so I rolled up the sleeves, shot my hand and forearm up the back door, freed up the other leg( stuck at the shoulder) pulled and pulled at each contraction, and yahoo out he came. Beautyful bull calf. The Jersey must have gotten hit by a beef cow as the calf is huge!! Gonna have to bottle feed though as the mama could care less about her new baby. We milked out a good bit of colosturom (sp?) and started bottle feeding. I know it's not a tractor story, but it's close enough for me. Just happy, thats all.

Great replys from all, thanks. We put the 2 in a stall, and poured sorgum molassas on the calfs back to get mama to lick the calf. Mama is starting to let the calf around now, and we saw foam (we call it calf slobbers) all around his mouth and some on her teets, so we put more sorgum on him. Seems to be working. Thanks folks!!

Biggered, you did everything right! That colostum is a very important move. I made the mistake one day of pulling a calf and leaving it behind the cow as they were both exhausted. I covered the calf with a blanket until the cow stirred about an hour later..too late she didn't want the calf, and it took a few days to educate her. Next one I pulled I dragged the calf right up to her nose and everything was fine when she got up. Cows is as complex as wimins..Mike in Exeter Ontario

Good for you and the Calf (And the Momma too)!

Had a ton of cattle when I was 12 yrs old... Between myself, my Dad, my Brother, and my Grandfather we had 400+ head of heifers.

Then Gramdpa bought the biggest, longest, (and meanest) Charlois bull you ever saw. It was a big pipe with 4 legs.

He busted the fence, too three days to get him corraled again.

And we pulled 100+ calves the next calving season.

And yes, a couple weeks after getting that Charlois Bull back in the corral we were having him for dinner (Grandpa's payback for getting out).

I do not recall you mentioning your age. I pulled my first calf when I was in my early teen years. That was way too many years ago to mention on here. Having grown up on a dairy farm in Wisconsin, I pulled many more after that. I still remember the wide-eyed excitement of that first time.

Congratulations! I've pulled hundreds of them over the years and that feeling of satisfaction of seeing that live calf knowing you were responsible for it's survival never goes away.

Like others have said, put momma and baby together in a small pen and make sure he's able to stand and suck. I've had to have the cows head snubbed to a post and a hind leg snubbed to another post sometimes before so the calf can suck, but it usually doesn't take many times of this before the cow finally realizes the calf's ok.

PS- if you have many cows, you might wanna consider looking for another vet....

Way to go biggered!

What a great feeling to bring a live one in to the world! You definately hit the other end of the spectrum when all your efforts are fruitless. The trials and tribulations of working with animals!

I've had to put the cow in head shoot so the calf could suck. And i've done that to get a cow to accept another calf.Just have to be more stubborn than the cow.

Ya done good. Best if you can disinfect your arm and hands before you go inside. Getting the colostrum in right away was the best thing for that calf too.

If you can, lock the pair in a pen together. Don"t let Mama away from that calf. If you can, restrain the cow and let the calf suck twice a day. If you are lucky she may finally accept the calf. Could be she has done this before, which is why she wound up at hte sale barn.

I had a vet get mad at me one day when he asked if we had a rope to get control of a cow's head and I came back with a wad of baler twine fashioned into a halter.worked before and just as good as the rope he got out of his truck. I guess he didn't beleive in recycling.
