Hey, I'm a High School Teacher working on a Cub in our after school shop program. We got the thing running after sitting 5 years, but it leaked all it's fuel out onto the ground. So, we replaced the needle and seat, made sure the float didn't have fuel in it, and replaced the cover gasket. Now when I'm trying to start it, it starts hard and only leaks fuel from the bottom of the carb under the throttle plate. It drips right as I'm trying to start it. Then it acts flooded, but the tractor also drips fuel when I have the choke totally pushed in (as in open). At least all the gas isn't leaking out anymore, but what have I missed??? Thanks for any help!

Even if the needle and seat seal perfectly, fuel can comeinto the bowl if the gasket around the needle seat fails to seal. I add a bit of Permatex #2 with a toothpick to that gasket before installing. Doing the Permatex a day in advance is good if the schedule permits. When the bowl is full, the base of the discharge nozzle and the high speed jet are both immersed in fuel. So those gaskets can leak, too. More Permatex as insurance. Every Cub has it's own personality. Try cranking by first engaging the starter with the choke open. If the engine is cold, apply the choke immediately after the starter engages, and just as quicky open the choke. If it fires and wants to die, quickly cycle the choke to keep it running. This will minimize the excess fuel, which will drip from the place provided.

Had a similar problem with a Cub I was restoring. (Hard starting and fuel leaking.) New wiring harness and a complete tune up took care of the hard starting. My gas leak was the result of warpage between the top of the carb and the lower bowl assembly. New gaskets did not help. If you held the carb up and looked at it from the side without the gasket installed, you could see the warp between the two parts. A new carb was the answer in my case. Good luck!

You may not have the float set correctly. Also if its a rubber tipped needle you may have to put a set in it for it to seal as it should. The way you put a set in it is the open up the carb and then pull the float off. Drop the needle back into the saet and tap on it a couple times. Also double check the you have the seat tight. Something else that might have happened when you open up the carb is, you broke some junk loose and now that junk is in one of the passages and clogging thing up. Any time you open up a carb its a good idea to soak it in carb cleaner and put a kit into it also
