SMTA vs. 450

I'm looking to get a larger, more powerful tractor (have 2 Hs and a Cub) and am trying to decide between a SMTA and a 450. The SMTA is nice and original, in good shape with good paint, has drawbar. The 450 is good and solid, more powerful with working TA, 2-pt hitch with 3-pt conversion, remote hydraulics. The owner of the SMTA wants well more than twice the asking price of the owner of the 450. I assume the SMTA is more collectable, even though the 450 seems to be way more workable. Is the SMTA THAT collectable? Are they extremely rare? Maybe its because its the "last" of the letter series? It seems to me that the 450 is just a later version of the SMTA? Does the naming scheme add THAT much to the value. Just wondering and I'd like to hear what you all think.

I have interest in working AND collecting tractors. One of my Hs is my "work" tractor with 3-pt, the other is a looker but I still plow with it. And before you suggest it, I'd buy them BOTH in a heartbeat if money were no issue!

Dad traded His '54 SM-TA for a '57 450-G so I ran them back-to-back in the very early 60's. Dad always bought 5-8 yr old primary tillage tractors to get away from that first big hit of depreciation. The SM-TA is a real good 3-bottom tractor, the 450 is a real good 4-bottom tractor. Both should have live 2-way hydraulics but even with available Fast Hitch the 450 will have two spare pair of remotes where the SM-TA only has one pair. Lots of SM-TA's have Fast Hitches installed but I never remember seeing one with it back in the 60's. I think it was an IHC Dealer installed accesory installed after the 400 was released with the FH. With the available factory power steering, TA, Live PTO, factory FH I would go for the 450 without a doubt. They don't really burn as much gas as people claim, They just have smaller tanks and do more work.

The 450 is a better working tractor then the SMTA, little more power and more options.

As for "collectability" it's an illusion. The 450 was built for essentially 2 years, the SMTA was built for essentially one year, total production numbers don't make either "collectable" except for maybe the diesels.

A good running 450 will drag a SMTA around with ease. In all of my years I have never heard of a 550. That might be like a SHTA. A 450 is the M/SM /SMTA replacement. SMTA's are for the IH groupies, that is why the price is high.

The SMTA is not rare, they were made one year,1954....they are popping up for sale every day..... the 450 is a big H .....the 550 is a big M..... sounds like the 450 is the best move for you.....

There is no such thing as a 550. The 450 evolved from the M not H. It goes H, SH, 300, 350, to 460. and the M, SM, SMTA, 400, 450, to 560.

Don, please don't take this personally, but you are way off.

1. There is no such thing as a 550. There is a 450 (M size) and a 650 (W-9 size, standard tread/wheatland only, no farmall version). IH made a 550 forage harvester, though.

2. The 450 is based on the M platform. It's the final evolution of the 4-cylinder M-size tractor before they bolted a 6-cylinder

Trent;

I think I would go with the 450. A long ime ago I run a 450 gas or a SM(no TA) Seemed to like the 450 better. Also the 450 has all the accesories on it. And cheaper too. But it is your money.

If you want a tractor to use and the 450 is half price and same condition, get the 450.

the smta is verry collectable becuase they were only made for one year so if you want to collect that would be the one to get if its original look at the serial number on it if its original it should have smta on it
