H Carb Adjustment???

I have removed, disassembled and soaked in carb cleaner for 2 days the carb on my H. Then I blew it out good...and then followed the instructons when installing the new kit.

The problem I am encountering is that I cannot get it adjusted correctly. It is running way to rich. It is smoking and the smoke does not appear to be oil..seems to me to be gas. I have adjusted the float twice and I guess I will try to do that again tomorrow...I thought I would ask today and see if there is something I am doing wrong and ask for advice.

Since I don't really know, I'm going to make a guess. I tried 3 rebuilt carbs on a newly rebuilt H engine and had the same problem. Too rich, black smoke, etc. The only thing I could find was the difference in the main air bleed jet (or whatever it's called) All three had different size holes. The one with the smallest hole runs the best. That part is NLA from CIH, so I'm going to try and have some made. ken

Oh I dunno,

My two gassers both are blowing a little black.

Think it is this darned cheap, watered down $3 fuel we get anymore.

Not the gas -- I have 6 letter series, none smoke. The ones with the non-adjustable carbs (except for the float) on C113 engines do run rich, but not enough to smoke. Has to be carb cleaning/adjustment, or wrong jets.

I don't have the manuals yet. Do the manuals cover carb adjustment? Without some sort of reference it soounds like you guys are just guessing. Working on airplanes for the past 13 years, I don't know if my brain can handle guessing when it comes to mechanical stuff.

Mike the carbs on tractors are so simple that most of the time the problem isn't really the carb but dirt in them and it getting missed when they are cleaned up. Carbs on an H will have 3 adjustments. 1 is an idle screw, one is a main jet and the other is a idle stop. A lot of times due to being old the main jet goes bad and needs to be replaced because the hole has gotten bigger then it should from people thigheniing down the adjustmnet to hard etc.

No place to plug in the computer, either.
(Insert chuckle here)
A few years' practice, they tell me, will develop the ear. I'm still practicing. Thank goodness my H runs smoothly already; I replaced the carb not long after I got it and hardly touched it. At their advanced age every one has its own character.
Me, too.
Good luck, Wm

Have you adjusted the main jet ?? You could have the float set corectly but if the main jet is way to far out it should smoke. When doing a carb for a Farmall I start with the main jet at about 3 turns from bottom and then go from there.

The correct way to adjust a letter series carb (NOT the Super Series or the C113/123 with no main jet adjustment is: Use the 3 or so turns out to get it started. Let it warm up. Fiddle with the rpm and idle mixture screws until it idles smoothly. Set at full throttle. Turn the main jet screw in until it begins to stumble. Turn out until it runs smooth plus maybe 1/4 turn or so (this is arbitrary). Return to idle. Open throttle rapidly. If the engine does not accelerate rapidly without stumbling, you need to do the idle and main jst adjustments again. Do not turn the main jet out until it smokes, then in until it stops. Instead, if it seems to lack power under load, then open the main jet about a quarter turn at a time. What I presented is what the operators manual says, it has not failed me yet. This assumes that the carb is clean, float at the by the book height, and that the engine, ignition, etc, and the valve adjustment is correct. It is a very simple adjustment. If it fails you have carb ignition, or engine problems.

That adjustment is just a starting point not the way it will need to be once running you will need to adjust it for the most power and also not haveing black smoke. There is no set place for that adjustment because all engines are differant and also depends on elavation and where you live. For instance a tractor I own that runs well here may not run well if it was in Denver CO
