815 with 407 engine question

I have an old 815 combine with a 407 engine. The other day while cutting soy beans it developed a major engine vibration. It was so bad that all the glass in the cab was shaking with engine at an idle. Upon further investigation I found that the fan had hit the shroud and broke it. Engine seems to run ok except for the vibration. My question is, is there an external(or internal) crank balancer on this engine or does anyone have any other ideas what might be causing this.

Can you check in the flywheel/ seperator drive clutch area & see if something came loose? I think we had the throwout bearing cause trouble one time, but never had vibration. Hope you find it.

Those engines don't have an internal balancer. The front crankshaft pulley is also the vibration dampener. Check that out first. If you haven't already, unhook the fan belt and see if the vibration goes away. If you've still got that damaged fan turning you'll get a vibration for sure. Figure out why the fan hit the shroud. Water pump out? Broken engine mounts? Could be somthing related to the flywheel. Also, make sure that there isn't something wrong elsewhere in the combine. Vibrations can travel a long ways.

Our 1460 had the crank balancer & pulley come apart between the double pulleys & the rubber cushion that separates them. Found it before it caused any trouble, but sounded like someone was hitting the tin with a sledge hammer. Make sure it isn't a belt with a chunk out of it. Check the fan/ water pump thing in case something is getting out of shape there. Check the hydrostatic pump to see if there might be a valve hanging up.

I can't remember how the traction and separator drives are set up on the 815.. is the traction drive straight-through from a "flexplate" on the flywheel, and is there a separator clutch on the flywheel?

This MAY be a totally different deal, but about 15 years ago, the Perkins in our Massey 760 began to shake like %#&& at speed. Turns out a chunk of the steel flexplate bolted to the flywheel had cracked, and flew off, putting what remained WAY out of balance. Any chance your problem is anything with the flywheel or clutch, or whatever drive mechanism is attached to the flywheel?

PLEASE post back when you figure it out... you've got me VERY curious!
