D-282 Diesel fuel filters

There was a discussion last week about using old diesel fuel. I said that I had just started my 660 with 4 year old fuel. It started hard but ran fine for about an hour. At that point the governor in the pump started "hunting". I shut it down.

I put new filters in yesterday and the tractor now starts and runs well.

I have a question about the filters. The parts book lists only one fuel filter type for both canisters. Every other diesel I have ever maintained has a primary and secondard filter. Did IH eventually specify a secondary filter for the second canister in the D-282?

There are two different filters for the 282 and both are still available from Case IH. As Bob stated one is the "waxed ball of string, the other a regular element type filter. Just replaced the ones in my 660 a couple months ago.

The560's had identical filters for fuel. 1066 & 1440 series combines have primary & secondary fuel filters.

I thought the first stage was a "wound cotton cord" filter that tends to take the water out of fuel, and I THINK the WIX filters catalog gives that option. I'll look later.
