The new sleeve and piston kit ordered from this site for my A arrived today. The sleeves do fit and they install much easier than the old ones came out. But the new seal ring is a fat O ring. The old seal was square edged with a near square cross section.

My old pistons are cast iron, flat top, and have 4 rings. The new ones are aluminum, flat top, and have 3 rings. The new ones have a V shaped notch on top but does not have any labeling that I can find. The old pistons do not have a notch. I assume the notch goes toward the front of the engine. Is this correct? Is there another purpose for the notch?

If/when I do this again is there a source for new cast iron pistons instead of aluminum?

Thanks.

Dude you don't even want to consider going back with the old cast iron pistons. The weight of the pistons coming down on during firing hammer your rod and main bearings and cause excessive wear.

It is common practice to replace original iron pistons with hypereutectic aluminum pistons in antique babbitted blocks just for this reason.

You'll find that your acceleration will be slightly quicker with these new aluminum pistons as well.

Actually the cast iron pistons don't cause excessive wear in an engine that runs at the speeds the A-Ms run. These engines were designed for Cast Iron pistons, and all the A-Ms that I have rebuilt using STD bore Cast Iron pistons run smother and also better than any I have rebuilt with aluminum pistons.

Just follow the instructions that came with the kit and you will be ok. Nothing wrong with the aluniumin pistons.

THe old ring was at one time like the new one, it is just misshapen from age. The notches go to the front, and you will have a long and happy relationship with the aluminum pistons, they are compatible with the metal of the sleeves, and a better material than the old ones. The reduced weight is also less stressful on the rod bearings and causes less reciprocating mass. Go for it, JimN

I agree whole heartedly. While I do understand the initial concern, there is no need to fear. They have been using aluminum pistons for YEARS and as was said, less reciporcating mass means less stress.
As with most newer parts improvements have been made.
