Thats the correct head for 450 and 400 gasoline engine. They must have sent wrong valve.

Several heads from M SM 400 450, 6 SW6 and 400 450 W series tractors may be installed on your tractor. Best to measure Valve length when ordering. Also look in middle of head under valve cover for a casting # and post back, someone will let you know which head it is. A few heads will have # stamped on right side of head. C 281 engine serial numbers started at 501 and if both are gasoline fuel tractors the head for C264 in a 400 tractor and C281 should be the same if not replaced.

Thought I better add this, the C-264 engine serial numbers started at 501 also but in the SM tractor. Serial number 136834 was first serial number for a C-264 in a farmall 400. On original gasoline heads the SM used a shorter valve than 400 on C-264 engines. You may have a kerosene or distallite head though. Good engine parts place can tell most times by valve length on those heads which one you need.

There are four different valve sets for the C-264 and C-281 depending on fuel and serial number. The gasoline engine changed its valves at motor number C-13685 and again at 161366. All 450's were sent from the factory with motors above C-161366.

You should have given the parts man the casting number on the head to avoid any confusion. It seems likely he asked for it but did the best he could using the model number of the tractor.

Correction, not that it makes any difference.

C-13685 should be C-136835 in previous post.

It appears that your head was not originally installed on the tractor. Someone replaced it with an earlier head.
