My I&T service manual shows generators as either hot or cold output. What does this mean?

Generator capacity varies inversely with generator temperature.

Cold output is when the generator is first started and "cold" (usually 68 degF).

Hot output is when the generator has been operating long enough for the generator internals to stabilize at operating temperature (I think 180 degF or 60 degC).

Hot output is 20 - 30% less than cold output. This is due to the higher resistance of the generator windings when hot.

It probably is a cryptic method of refering to settings on the light/gen switch that allow a high charge rate (for colder temps or repeated starts, or low charge rate for hot wether or long operating between starts. Either way it is a marginal description. Many real voltage regulators are temperature compensated and will charge at a rate a few tenths of a volt higher when the wether is cold. I hope this helps, JimN
