I have a Super A with low oil pressure and any help would be greatly appreciated. I had a blown head gasket when I bought it. I had drained out 8 qts of oil/ water, changed the gaskets, filter, and oil twice trying to flush out the junk left behind from the water. Now, when I start the engine (113) I have good oil pressure (mid-gauge)for about five minutes. After that, the pressure drops slowly to around 10psi. Advancing the throttle does not help. I had also replaced the gauge and cleaned the oil pump. Any Ideas? Does anyone know what the pressure should be on a numbered gauge? Thanks for any help I can get.

If you have 10lbs go for it there are more of these engines running with the 10 or so lbs pressure than not and have been that way for more yrs than i can count. 10LBS is enough to keep going for years as you arent going to plow for 12hrs a day anyhow.

If you still have low oil pressure after redoing the pump cover I would plasti-gage the rod and main bearings. Too much clearance here will lower oil pressure. Hal

AS others have said I hand lapped mine with a sheed of w/d sand paper over a sheet of glass, then use plasti guage (from NAPA) to check your clearance.

I rebuilt the pump on my H. The H pump has a cast iron or steel cover. I surface ground the cover flat, cleaned up the rough gear edges, and reassembled the pump. Great oil pressure all the time. I am surprised a cover would be alumimum? The pressure on a gear pump will always move the gears into the cover. The gears are hard, so I guess the cover is designed to wear.

I had low oil presssure on mine for a long time.
After reading post after post on the subject, I took
off the oil pan removed the pump took it apart and
took the bottom plate wirh the grooves worn in it, and put a sheet of fine emery cloth on my table saw. Then I spent about half an hour just slideing the plate around on the emery cloth till the grooves were mostly gone. Reassembled the pump with a real thin gasket, and wound up with pressure about 50 pounds.

There are no camshaft bearings, but that only means the camshaft rides directly in the cast iron. It can still wear and create excess clearance. The rod bearings are another possibility.

There are no cam bearings in the engine, so it cannot be that. The most common issue is a oilpump out of spec. The pump cover can warp or be worn. flat sanding with 200 grit silicon carbide paper on a piece of flat glass can take out marks and flatten the cover. Very thin gaskets are used to set gear clearance. (about .0008 to .0015) If the pump is good and the pressure stays low, the mains and rods may need to be checked for clearance. JimN

This is a very common problem. There is a cast aluminum plate on the bottom of the oil pump that will warp and let the oil leat out of the pump and prevent it from building pressure. Sometimes they can be milled flat again, or dressed on a piece of sandpaper taped to a sheet of plate glass. The gasket under the cover set the clearance between the gears and the plate, so the thickness it critical; use a factory gasket(s). A new cover is around $80.00. Also, worn main bearings or camshaft journals can cause low oil pressure, but I'd try the pump first. It is easy to do, just drop the pan and the pump is held in by two bolts on the side of the block with a thin metal plate bent around them to lock them in.

I have the same problem with mine and it's been doing it for years.
