I've got my eye on a nice looking 454. The only problem I noticed was this...

When I engage the PTO at idle, run the engine up to 540 PTO speed then back off the throttle quickly (While the PTO is still engaged) It makes a clankety-Clunk sound as it coasts down that seems to be coming from the transmission...??? It's got the live PTO.

Is this normal or is there a bearing or something going out??

Hi TractorFix123, If the clutch and pressure plate have not been replaced recently, my first guess would be the teeth on the pressure plate where the PTO shaft is driven from are worn. This will cause a rattling of the PTO when you back off on engine RPM and there is an implement connected to the PTO without an overrunning clutch. Eventually pressure plate teeth will strip and PTO and hydraulics will stop.

There was a 6 foot bushhog attached to the tractor when I was testing it out.....if it was the teeth, would it make more of a grinding sound? This was more like a brick in a clothes dryer type of sound (maybe not quite as harsh)??

Thanks!

Hi TractorFix123, you can do a test by shutting the engine off with the PTO engaged and then try turning the PTO shaft to the right and then to the left to see how much wear there is in the teeth of the pressure plate. Also can open the inspection plate on the bottom of bell housing and have an assistant turn the PTO shaft while observing the outer shaft which is the PTO drive shaft.
