Hydraulics/Trans fluid question on an H

Drained the old fluid out of H, refill capacity is supposed to be 24 quarts. I only got about 18 quarts out of it including the water.
Is there more fluid laying in crevices/pump, etc?

How much fluid should I put back in it?

I am using Hy-Tran....is that ok?

Thanks!

Hi, I have used Hy-tran in my H and WD9 for more than 30 years, would never consider going back to 90 wt. I put a street ell in the check hole pointed up, so they run about 2 inchs higher. These tractors get a lot of hours and I am convinced I have a lot less bearing problems now. Good Luck, Chuck

I have a 1940 H. It calls for 30wt oil in the Hydraulics. For the trans and Dif. use 85 or 90 Wt. that's what I have in mine in upstate NY

Tranny and hydraulics are separate on an H, and the contents of the belly pump do not count against the 24 quarts.

Use gear lube in the tranny. Only use Hytran in newer tractors where the tranny is the hydraulic reservoir.

OK....so draining the fluid out of that plug that is on the very bottom rear of the tractor, am I draining the trans or hydraulics?

This is a 1951 H.

Transmission!

Hydraulic system drain is a 1/2" pipe plug at the bottom of the belly pump...

ok, NOW I feel stupid.

Don't mean to be thick headed, I know I haven't had much sleep in the past few days.

So...let me see if this is correct...
1) Plug on very bottom rear of tractor drains the transmission and rear end. This should be refilled with 85w-140 or 90W, correct? Is this also true for colder climate such as upstate NY?
Also, this refills via the plug on top of the platform next to the steering support that takes a big square wrench?

2) Hydraulics drain under the belly pump, ok to use HY tran in that....and refills in the dipstick hole I assume?

I honestly thought this tractor shared fluid throughout the trans and hydraulics.

Thanks for the help.

Anyone have pictures for an old fool?
The only manual I have is an IT manual and it gives me nothing.

Guess I'll have to buy an operator's manual.
Anybody got one to sell?

You can get an operator's manual from this site. Upper left of this page, "Tractor Manuals."

Brian - You are 100% correct in both #1 and #2!

Incidentally 85W-90 in the tranny works just fine here in chilly western NY. All 3 of my tractors had been filled with it for years - they run and shift just fine at -10 deg. (When it gets colder than that I stay inside by the fire!)

The belly pump will run fine on almost any hydraulic oil, you can easily get by using a generic Hytran equivalant without paying the price for Hytran. As mentioned earlier it came out using 20 weight nondetergent motor oil when it was new.

Using 80w+ in the rear end will be fine in an H. It's what was in them when new and their tolerances could only have increased over 50+ years of use. Neighbor has an M with 90W140 (found it somewhere) in the rear end it runs a lot better in the winter then it did with it half full of water.

Don't use Hy-Tran in the transmission/rearend. The gears will keep spinning for an obsene amount of time when you push the clutch in, and you will have to grind into gear. Also, there will be more noise from the gears and it will be more likely to leak. Hy-Tran is fine for the belly pump hydraulics, used it in my H for a couple years and was just fine.

I prefer 85w-140 in the rearend/transmission on the A/B/C/H/M and Supers (except SMTA, any TA tractor needs Hy-Tran). It keeps the gears quieter, they stop turning when you push the clutch in, and less prone to leakage through those old seals.

Brian - Not unusual drain a couple gallons less than a full fill from the transmission on account of leakage over the years.

Also do not be surprised if after refilling the tranny immediately begins leaking from the belly pump drive and input shaft seals at the front of the transmission!

These seals often fail when they get old. The leaking however pretty much stops once the tranny oil level drops below the level of the belly pump drive shaft, only to resume leaking once the transmission is refilled to capacity.

Incidentally the belt pulley gearbox retains only about about a quart or so.

Be sure you pulled the pipe plug underneath. Fill to the level of the plug on the left side of the transmission housing.

I am probably wrong about this, but seems to me I have heard more than once that the lift-all hydraulic systems on the H's and M's used 30 wt motor oil. mike

He means the trans/rear end. I prefer 90W in that. Hytran is ok for both the hyd and trans (I do have reservations about using it in the transmission, and won't do it), but may or may not cause an old system to leak.

There is some oil up in the pulley mechanism. You can loosen the pulley to drain it, as I recall. I haven't done this in several years.
