Just curious if there was any particular reason why Farmall built the A,B,Super A, etc. offset tractors with the motor on the left instead of on the right. Seems almost like a "British" sort of thing; steering wheel on right side and shift lever on left. I had pictures developed at Wal-Mart and they were reversed; that is what started the crazy thought. Thanks

Best answer I've heard is that when plowing the operator can sight up along the furrow better from that side. This doesn't hold true if you using a 2 way plow. Dave.

Bob was in the planing room at the tractor plant and though to himself "what if we shifted everything over?" and seeing as how we read and write from left to right Bob simply got out his pencil and moved the seat and controls to the right. So, does that answer your question :)

most transportation, ag, and industry standards we embrace today have roots in the days that manual labor and draft animals were used. i read somewhere in europe they get on the horse on the wrong side! wonder how many things we do without thinking today have a root in the past because of manual/draft animal customs?
ever notice early combines and balers have pickup on wrong side? lots of interesting things to notice. to figure out why we had to have the draft animal stuff that certain direction could pose a fun research project!

HI Interesting question. Here is one for you
Why is the fuel tank for the space shuttle the size it is. It has to fit through a single railroad tunnel. Rail road track was originally
designed on witdth of a horse to walk in the middle. So space shuttle tank based on width of a horse

My opinion is that many farmers historcally turned to the right at the end of the row, furrow, or "land". This may be partially due to the direction of most single sided moldboard plows. The visibility in that direction is greatly enhanced in the offset design, JimN

Lewis: It was less expensive to build them with operator on the right. Just think about the clutch and brake pedal assembly to start with, having the clutch pedal fartherest from torque tube would doubled cost of that pedal assembly.

The way they are built suited many of the mounted implements much better as well, mowers for example.
