Does anyone know where I should get a new set of head bolts for a '53 Cub? I was reinstalling the head yesterday and snapped one off at about 35 foot-pounds and so I have decided to replace them all. I would prefer to buy new bolts, not used and cleaned bolts.
Thanks

I had three bolts twist off when I pulled my head. I got #8 bolts to fit as close as possible and cut to exact size, worked great. I always use anti sieze on all head bolts. You get better torque and they will come out if you ever need to pull them again.

Lane, I replaced all of mine on my Cub and bought them at the local Case IH dealer. They were about $2.00 each, 6 long ones and 9 short ones. For some reason the short ones are more expensive, probably because of the odd length. TM tractor parts (see web site on reply below)has them also, but for some reason are more than that (usually they have better prices than Case IH). Roger

Grade 8 from the bolt house will work for the long bolts, but the short ones are an in between length. Don't use the next available length, as they will protrude into the ports and get carbon on the threads, making later removal much more difficult. A dealer or TM will have the short ones.

You could go to the hardware store as well. Make sure they are #8 Grade bolts. Also might have to cut them to the proper length. Make sure to follow manual for head bolt tightening sequence.

Good luck.
