Hi,I'm still working on this "Smokey" 674D. I'm trying to get the tach working but ain't having no luck. I took the cable off at the Tach it self but the cable don't turn when the engine is running so I took the cable off at the engine and yes the cable is broke. So before I ran out and bought a new cable I thought I better check to see if the piece of cable that was left on the engine end would turn with the engine running but it don't. My I&T mannual don't show anything about the tach. Any body know what should I check next / Thanks for your time and any help

Hi Scotty, the tach drive is driven by the camshaft timing gear and the shaft on the tach worm gear wears. Check the archives someone posted a fix by brazing a bead on the end of worm gear shaft and filing to proper length.

Can't remember which style of German Diesel engine it was posted against. They all use common parts all the way from 3 cyl D179, 4 cyl D206,D239,D246,D268 and 6 cyl D310,D358.

Have you resolved the smoking 674D?

Hi JB2, When you say driven off of the cam gear does this mean the front of the motor has to come apart or can I take it apart from the cable end to get to the rest of the tach drive stuff ? Thanks, and No I haven't resolved the smoking problem with this 674D but I have named her "Smokey' though. Man the harder you run this engine the less it smokes. Also as soon as the tractor gets to runnimg temp. the tractor don't smoke at all wide open and still don't start smoking until I get to about 1/3 throddle then it starts smoking alittle and the more I back off the throddle the more it smokes. Seems like the hotter the motor gets the less smoke. I rebuilt the injector, new nozles and springs and housing caps and they all open at about 3300 timmig seems to be good starts cold 2 or 3 turns , running temp starts about 1 or 2 turns. Seems to start good. I still don't get it though. Maybe the pump is having trouble keeping up the 3300 psi it needs to keep the injectors opening smooth at low speed ? Thanks for your time JB2
