Too many things could have happened. Split the tractor then you can fix what is wrong

A bit of thread hijacking here, but what all can be done to the clutch without splitting the tractor?

Jay Walt, most I-H tractors had an inspection pan on the bottom, so you could adjust clutch fingers, inspect for wear and even change the clutch plate. An H can have a clutch change without splitting the tractor. You should be able to get at most yoke and throw out bearing assemblies...Mike in Exeter Ontario

It sounds like a throw out bearing problem. I had one go when the yoke that holds the throw out bearing(a mica disc) broke off one side, the shaft that holds the yoke was badly worn. If I have the correct tractor , you should be able to remove a pan underneath and access the shaft and bearing. I got all the parts used for $60 and it has worked fine since. This was on a B250 which is alike to the 444, I believe. get underneath, get the inspection pan off and you will know right away. It is a simple job to remove that pan.

Not sure what type of disc is in it but if the pad comes off it can wedge in there and not let the disc stop turning. Also a broken spring can do the same thing as it falls out of it's place in the disc.

Could be the the throwout bearing went out or the fingers wore off the pressure plate.

Had a similar thing happen on a B175, it turns out that water had gotten in there while it was parked outside, and the clutch disc had "rusted" to the flywheel. Can't remember exactly how I got 'er loose but I think I wired the pedal all the way down, took off the inspection plate, and pried the disc loose with a big screwdriver or crowbar. Luckily, this hasn't happened again.

Oops, I'm sorry I missed the fact that you were using the tractor when it happened. My reply above is probably not applicable to your situation.
