I posted about my Farmall C charging problems about two weeks ago. I just finally got a chance to work on it some more, heres a link to the previous topic...

Hope this helps cuz it relates to my A. Wouldn't charge. Had gen checked at a shop-OK. VR is just a voltage cutout and points are set for 6.7-7.1 volts at the battery, after it works.
The moveable brush is the top side of the field and closer to the armature brush the more current it will put out, no current coil in VR. There is a resistor to ground in the VR that connects to the field post, and a wire to a resistor at the light switch. Check all connections for paint rust etc. and connect a wire from the ground side of the resistor at the light switch to the frame so you are not depending on the ground screws for the cover plate. Here is what should happen, with the field post grounded 16-18 amps to a discharged battery, adjust brush for this. Also adjust the VR coil spring for 6.9 v + - 0.2v. Then connect the wire from the field post to the VR. Current will be 3-4 amps to a discharged battery. Connect wire to light switch with it turned CCW to the off detent, current 8-9 amps. Disconnect lights and turn light switch on, 16-18 amps. The two resistors are the same and available from Delco, 30-40 ohms each. The light switch shorts the field to ground when on so high current.

All could be well!!!
If your battery is fully charged, the amp meter will stay in the middle. Check your voltage on the battery when wide open and lights off. If it is around 7 to 7.2 volts, you are in deed operational. It is fixed. If less than that (I would be suprized) and it needs the voltage adjusted a bit higher in the regulator. Replace the cover when checking the output voltage, because the cover changes the fields strength, and will change the setting made when it is open. If I had your regulator in hand I would tell you which tab or screw to adjust, there are too many types. A book on regulator adjustment is needed to assure success. JimN

Tim, It sounds like your wiring is correct, the wire on the 3rd brush should have been the leading Field winding which would wire up to the incoming ARM post if it were only a 2 brush genny which is the same basic place as there on the non grounded brush..... .

If it charges ONLY with the gennys Field post dead grounded but NOT otherwise, the problems either the VR or the VR isnt well grounded or the wires bad from FLD on the VR to the gennys Field post. I would try n run a good ground to the VR"s case n see if that fixes the problem cuz if its not well grounded (usually to gennys case) it cant ground the Field as it is supposed to.

Many VR"s will work at EITHER Pos or Neg ground so is yours compatible with your ground?? If a VR were hooked up to a genny that wanst polarized correct and the tractor started it could damage the VR, have you Polarized lately and/or changed the battery ground???

John,
Checked over some more things on the C. First I pulled off the voltage regulator and cleaned up the top of the generator where it mounts to. Put it back together, repolarized the gen, got a nice spark. Started it up and still just a slight charge. I ran an extra wire from the VR mounting base back to the ground post of the battery and still nothing. Then hooked up the field to ground and it worked perfectly. The VR is stamped on the side for 6 volt positive ground. Any ideas?

Thanks

Tim, Sorry Im about out of other ideas, it still remians if she charges ONLY with the gennys field dead grounded and its NOT a bad VR ground or connection, it must be a abd VR

HOWEVERRRRR RRR Jim has a darn good point above, if its a good battery and its "fully charged" it shouldnt be charging much at all as it would right after start up when the battery is a lil low. the best thing as posted is place a voltmeter on the battery and it should be around 6.3 volts sititng if full charged but rise from 6.5 to 7 or so running at high RPM if the charging system works. If the belt is good n tight and all connections are good maybe just use her a while and see what happens.

If the genny happened to be a 3 brush type its charging is limited by the location of the adjustable third brush and if its set for low charge shes never gonna peg the ammeter super high.

Try her a while n let us know, maybe the VR will settle in and the contacts clean up????? ? if it needs (for higher charge) adjusted you beter take it to a shop maybe

I checked the voltage across the battery. I got 6.26 v with the engine off, 6.30v at high idle, 6.25 with dim lights and 6.23 with bright lights.

Thanks

I would like to see a bit mor charge voltage than that, 6.6 to 7 volts will charge the battery more adequately. I would get a book and adjust it, or find some one who knows how as John T indicates. JimN

I forgot to mention that I also checked the wire between the voltage regulator's field post and the field post on the generator by running a jumper between them with no change on output.

Thanks
