I'm redoing a '41 "A" and need to replace the brake bands. I have a service manual on order but would like to know if you have to take the rear housings off to change the brake bands. Or does someone out there have a diagram or instructions on how to do it? Thanks!

You have to remove the drawbar as it bolts to the final drive and they have to be removed. Easier to take apart when the whole wheel assy is removed. A cherry picker is handy to remove the finals as they are heavy. Only remove one side at a time so as to keep tractor balanced. I have done several not a bad job just secure the tractor so it is stable.just leave the oposite wheel on while working other side. Probably will want to replace the seals while apart. You can reline the bands if you have acsess to some lining and rivets.

Hi Randy, As Kevin mentions, the brake band may be froze on the pin in the rear housing, that can be a pain and will require some penetrating oil.

Block up the drawbar, and get some 6x6 blocks to get you up to the lip of the bull gear covers. This way when you have it unbolted you can slide the housing out just enough to get the old brake band off and the new one on.

When I did mine on my Super A I took the whole thing apart and glass beaded the brake drum but you could get away without doing that.

Randy,

You have to remove the bull gear housings to get at the brake bands. Be sure you disconnect the brake band rods from the pedals before you try and pull off the bull gear. The idea is that the brake band should stay with the tractor. However when i went to remove mine the bands were forzen to the pin which stayed with the gear housing.
