I have a 5488 and the low side dont work on the shifting on all the odd numbers and it steers a little hard and the brakes act funny too . would it be one of the hyd pumps? or is it more?

Does the sentry light come on and if it does then one easy thing that you could do is to swap the 2 switches under the floor plate around with each other and see if the problem switches to the even gears. These 2 switches are straight up and down with a pig tail pluged into the harness. The older switches would leak externally and all the way through the wires and into the plug end and cause such a failior. If that don't work then there are other things that can be checked before the clutch pack is condemed. As for the hyd problem checking the filter for metal would be the first and if no metal is found then there could be a valve hanging up or a bad spring causing the brakes and steering to act up. Is your tractor front wheel assist and have duals on the front or not. Please respond to what you know and find.

I checked the tractor out yesterday . the sentry light does not come on the fuses all are good you can hear the trans shift when shifting from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4 and 5 to 6 but 2,4,6 only work . the clutch slips also and the power steering dont work and when not reved up the brakes dont work also but the remotes work . would it be a bad pump? or would it be the clutck packs causing all the problems in the trans or both ? I checked the filters and changed them the oil was clear and no pieces or shavings were found . do I have to split it twice to put the clutch packs in it or split it by the engine ?

It sounds like that whole circut isn't working right but maybe the packs are bad but you'd think you'd see that in the oil when you drain it. Doing some pressure checks would be the next thing to do.

If its the clutch packs on the high and low side how much does it cost to replace both of them if it goes thru the shop or if I do it on my own ? I do a lot of wrenching on my own stuff . I have a feeling that its internal because the dealer sold it as is to the guy before me . if it was a simple fix they would have fixed it . is it a pretty tough job to replace the packs?

Sounds like the clutch packs and the master clutch is slipping probably low or no pressure in the regulated circut. Need to do some pressure testing first. You have to split it twice basicly, You split it between the rear frame and the speed trans. and then remove the speed trans. thats where the odd and even is located and in the front half of the rear frame is the range trans. and that is where the master clutch is located. There was some updates on those tractor trans's that some didn't get(They called it FIX AS FAILED) and I think the updated parts are all that you can get and they are expensive. Theres about 50-60 hrs. shop labor and it takes some good stands to do that without removing the cab and several special tools are involved.

thanks for the reply my IH dealer told me that the clutch packs are around $400.00 for both and the rest is all labor . maybr a guy might be lucky to just have a bad pump . I will do some pressure testing and pinpoint the problem I bought it for $ 9.000.00 and the rest of its in pretty nice cond for a 2wd . maybe I didnt pay to much for it anyway .

It's kind of hard to understand your problem, Now You have a low, med,hi on one stick and 1-2,3-4,5-6 which shifts as 1 is odd and 2 is even so on so forth, Now on the 1-2 (or odd/even) stick there is a micro switch on the bottom of that stick that can give trouble and then there are two fuses, two relays, two pressure switches, two shifting soleniods and a shift module, all before you worry about clutch packs. So explain in more detail your problem and I may can help

shifting would be one of the solenoids under the floor is bad, as for the hydraulics, check filter first.

Yes, it could be a clutch pack, but you should start with the filters. Cut them open and look in the folds.

There are "updated" low/high clutch packs that can be put in by splitting at the engine, they have larger splines to last longer.
