how do you remove the camshaft gear. I have tried three gear pullers and could not get a good bite to get the gear off. I believe that has to come off to remove the crank right?

What engine we talken about and no ya realy do not have to remove the gear to pull the crank . If you are doing a total rebuild and having the block boiled then you are going to pull the cam anyhow so that new cam bearings can be installed . The way i remove the cam gears is with a bearing spliter and a press after the cam is out . Now i do have my three jaw and also a good two jaw puller that will get the job done but they did not come from Harbor freight and they cost me a a good chunk of change.

Press on gear with no provision to pull off I drill and tap and use a puller to remove it. I then drill and tap the center of the cam to reinstall. On a 123 I drill and tap 2 5/16 bolt holes in the gear. I usually drill and tap the cam to accept a 7/16 stud and use a thick size washer and nut to pull it back on. The gear and cam will drill and tap easy. Keep’r’ straight.
If you plan to remove the cam then the cam should come out with the gear. You kin also do this to the crank gear if needed.

Think from other posts its a H you have. If so and you're wanting to remove steel plate behind front cover without removing Camshaft to take the crankshaft out, yes the camshaft gear needs removed to get plate off. Home made is all I've found to work. If you want to take camshaft out without removing gear the lifters, oil pump and 2 bolts you can get to through holes in cam gear if engine will turn to line up bolts with holes.

Can you weld? I made a simple puller with a 4 inch long section of pipe that was just smaller than the diameter of the center of the 3 holes of the cam gear. I welded 3 small L shaped pieces that lined up with the hole locations on one end and a strap with a nut welded to it on the other end. Just put the L shaped peices in the holes and turn to engage the back of the gear. Screw a rounded bolt through the nut and pull the gear right off. It took me ~ 45 minutes to make it from scraps.

You can pull the camshaft without removing the gear. That gear was probably pressed on using a hydraulic press. I would make a note of how the dots on the cam gear, crankshaft gear and the magneto gear are meshed. Hal

Does the gear have tapped holes in it?
