Well, I decided I had to get that MCV replaced so I took it back to them. Now they trouble shooted and tested the pump on it and told me that was alright, and they charged me $155 to do the test, well now that they have torn it apart, they now tell me the pump is also bad along with the MCV, a new pump they said is $600-$800, but if they put in the new style pump thats replaced the orginal as the original style isn't availible anymore, they would have to go with a different MCV which he said was 3X the money, well, 3X the money would be $4,800 for the MCV!. So the original estimate was for a maximum of $2,500, now it is something to the tune of $5,700 for all new parts!!!!! !!!, so they are going to try to locate a used pump from a salvage tractor so they can install the old style MCV that they have in stock. I think this tractor has turned into a money pit!, and it don't have 4wd either which I would really like.

Maybe a 2nd opinion is needed here? Like this doctor said you need surgery & the next said no? Without seeing the parts, it's hard to draw conclusions, but I would bet 90% of the tractors out there running have some "scored" parts in them. Unless there was rust & pitting, I can't imagine the valve is junk. And the pump test? It's good - it's bad - Like TGIN said, maybe you need a real mechanic, not one that throws parts 'till the tractors fixed.

There is very little to wear out in a MCV,almost always if there is something wrong it will just be a stuck valve and can usually be freed up and made 100% usable. But yes it very possible that the pump is worn and needs replaced. Besides I have never heard of a new or old style pumps and or MCVs. I believe they are all the same.

They looked at the valves and pulled them out and tried cleaning them, but they were all scored the mechanic said, and I asked about rebuilding it, but they assured me this MCV is junk, housing and all. They claimed they tested the pump off the remote and said it was fine, but now they tell me it needs to be replaced, so I need to ask some more questions and see what made them change their minds on the pump. They claim that the pump Case IH offers for that tractor now, is not compatible with the original style MCV so if they installed a new pump, then they would have to go with this super expensive MCV?.

Jon,
It is as others have mentioned it is hard to tell the condition of the valve & pump without seeing them. Very seldom did a valve have to be replaced. With a through cleaning and lapping of the spools they were very serviceable. The dealer has to guarentee his work so become very cautious. Have got some rebuilt valves from Abilene Machine, Abiline KS if could not be salvaged. The pump probably shows some wear but could be serviceable for your use. Would do some more checking before I went with new parts

From what they said, the MCV is in very bad condition and the valves are scored so bad they can't slide freely anymore. I drove out there and talked with them just now and there was some misunderstanding on my part when he was telling me about it over the phone, I thought he said the hydraulic pump that they tested was no good, but I didn't understand him right. What it was is the only MCV that they can get for it does not have any steering controls built into it like my old one does, so the new MCV they have will fit it just fine, but unless they changed the steering box under the steering wheel over to an updated version with those controls built into that, I would not have any steering and replacing that "hand pump" for the steering is $$$. I don't know if maybe I got an oddball or what, but thats what is going on, and so now they are looking at finding me a used MCV with those steering controls built into it. I didn't really think they were trying to burn me for a minute, they have always treated me good, but I got confused when he was talking about changing a pump, so I decided I had to go see them to make sure I had a handle on what was happening.

Hi, it have a parts kit to replace the flow divider valve, in the MCV. It's a sleeve with a spool in it. It will fix your steering problem. Check with a CASE-IH dealer. Bernard le mécano

A Case IH dealer is doing the work on my tractor. They are going to see if they can find a used one and of course, if they do, they'll have to guarantee it. If they can't find a used, then I guess we will be looking at other alternatives.

Your dealer is correct on the new MCV, the steering relief valve has been moved to the steering motor.

The flow divider valve is the only one that gets scored, and there is a fix for that. The dealer can get an improved replacement from his parts stock - check the service letters.

I have worked on these tractors since before yours was made and have only replaced one MCV in that time.

If it really is bad, then I suggest a junk yard, there are many of the 74, 84 series parts available for a reasonable price.
