Well, yesterday went up to Dad's and he gave us all a tractor. I figured I was going to get a green one as he had 5 of those and only one red one in the lineup to give away. We all drew out of a hat and I got the farmall cub (with mower, cultivator, dozer blade and plow). Lots of memories with it. I remember spending hours on end mowing the waterways, under the electric fences and roadside bar ditches. I even remember the time he come running up in the yard (I was 9-10 yr old) and getting me to come help him set the tractor back upright after he had dropped a rear wheel in a hole and dumped it over on its side. First thing he said is you can't tell momma and worry her and I never did. I asked him yesterday if he had ever told momma and he said no. She passed away a couple years ago!
Sure glad to get that tractor but sure is hard to set there and watch him give everything away to the kids. Seems as though he is planning on a quick end and it hurts! I guess that I should be glad that he has made it to 85 yr. old.

Michael, it is probably hard on you and your Dad, but at the same time he wants you kids to have something that is a keepsake. I'm only 59 and I hope to be around for a long time , however I have already made up my mind who gets my tractors, One grandson who has been a tractor fanatic since he was about a year and a half old, his parents will likely get my farm so he will have a place to keep them. My other grandchildren will be given like value in some other form as well as my other two adult children. There is nothing wrong with estate planning but it can be a sentimental time. Tell your Dad about your memories with that tractor and tell him how much you appreciate his generousity to you and your siblings. After I'm gone I can't oversee the dispersal of my estate but I can now! My favourite saying is "You never see a Brink's truck following a hearse to the cemetery"

Sounds like a nice way to distribute the collection... be happy you don't have to buy the tractor on his estate auction!

Ya! Guess that is true! Not whining. Just kind of sad as I think more about it. Those good days and those good memories seem so far ago.

I'm only 25 and I shed a tear from time to time thinking about the good old days with my Dad and running the old equipment... and I do that pretty much every summer yet!

It's always difficult to think of loved ones passing. I guess what I wrote earlier probably seems insensitive - I didn't mean it that way, I meant it will be nice to have fond memories instead of being upset about memories being sold to the highest bidder.

I agree with Michael Soldan - use the opportunity to reminisce!

That is a nice way to do I think. I know dad wants me to have his 270 Leyland and I am making plans to visit him as he is failing.
